HomeMy WebLinkAbout1967-09-13 September 13, 1967 The Histerie Districts Commission met at the time and place specified in the public notice of hearing en the application for a Certificate of Appropriateness by ?trot Church of Christ, Scientist, with respect to the erection and display of a sign en the first neer store of the front elevation of the building at 1736 Massachusetts Avenue, whieh is within the Battle Green District. t+smbers present were Commissioners Wilbur i. Jaquith, Chairman, Ruth 1. Tevsn and Vex H. :strew and Associate Commissioners 4eer/e W. Tmeryi ^srl . Fryant end Donald . t1bite. in the absence of Philip B. Parsons, Secretary, upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously V'3'TED that Ruth O. Bevan serve as Secretary 're Tempers. The Chairman read the letter of application and the natiom of hearing. Mrs. Sabina 'su/sen, Chairman of the Planning and Rodeoerating Committee and qtr. Yeager of the JIM DID I'T SION. CO. appeared. Scale drawings of the proposed sign were presented to the Commission. Upset motiles duly made end sesended, it was unsnimeualy ii''3TBD to issue a Certificate to the applicant. Asseeiate Commissioner Ihite spots with Charles Cole, the Architect for the building involved, end he stated that the material en the frieze could not be removed. Inc . withrespectto the erection of a single family dwelling with two-car garage as noted below, at Lot #9, Brigham Road which is within the HaneoCk—Clarke District The general style, layout, dimensions and details of the design of the dwelling and garage appear on or may be scaled from Sheets Nos . 4, 5A and 6B of 11 #2698 (Rev) by George D. Reynolds Associates submitted to the Commission at the adjourned hearing on September 6, 1967 and amended by the applicant at said adjourned hearing. The location of the building on the lot is shown on Plot Plan by Albert A. Miller and Wilbur C . Nylander, Civil Engineers & Surveyors, dated August 4, 1967 submitted to the Commission at the hearing on August 16, 1967. The chimney is to be constructed of well-cleaned, used, common brick and is to have a brick cap. All windows of the dwelling and garage are to be of wood and are to have wood muntins . The front entrance and steps are to be capped with bluestone, and the driveway is to be black- topped. No more of the foundation walls are to be exposed than is shown on said drawings, as amended, and the walls are to be left in their natural concrete state . The clapboards , downspouts and garage doors are to be painted an olive-drab color matching the Armada color sample sub- mitted to the Commission at the adjourned hearing. All windows, trim, gutters, shutters and doors, other than the garage doors, are to be painted white and the wrought iron railing of the front entrance is to be painted black. Lights for the front entrance and garage may be installed provided that the style, type and location of the fixtures are approved by the Commission prior to installation. Johnson et al d/b/a The Card Center with respect to the erection and display of a sign on the first floor store as noted below, at 2 Depot Square which is within the Battle Green District The sign is to be located on the Emery Park-Depot Square side elevation of the building as shown on drawing #4850A by University Sign Co. , Inc . , dated September 5, 1967, submitted to the Commission at the hearing on September 6, 1967 . The sign is to bear the legend: " Party Supplies the CARD CENTER Paper Specialties I' with that portion of the legend "Party Supplies" being centered above that portion of the legend reading "Paper Specialties" . The design, style and size of lettering of the sign appear on or may be scaled from the aforesaid drawing. The letters of the sign are to be of 3/16" (inch) matte finish black plexiglas and are to be fastened flush to the white frieze of the building. The sign may be illuminated by lights consisting of single tube flourescent lamps of medium light intensity recessed in the cove above /the frieze of the building. CHAIRMAN I • i TOWN OF LEXINGTON #0,0 .+pyQ Massachusetts _ APRIL ro`^ HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS This certificate is issued pursuant to Chapter 447, Acts of Massachusetts, 1956, as amended, to First Church of Christ, Scientist with respect to the erection and display of a sign on the first floor store of the front elevation of the building as noted below, at 1736 Massachusetts Avenue which is within the Battle Green District The design, layout, size and style of lettering appear on or may be scaled from a drawing by Jim Did It Sign Co. , drawing #3938, dated August 18, 1967 submitted to the Commission at the hearing on September 6, 1967. The letters of the sign are to be black and are to be cut out of 3/16" ( three-sixteenth inch) plexiglas . The letters are to be fastened flush to a wooden backboard approximately 121 (twelve feet) long by 2'6" (two feet six inch) high, not including the scroll-cap at the top of the backboard as shown on the afore- said drawing. The sign is to be located above the first floor window and door and is to bear the following legend: "Christian Science Reading Room The backboard, moulding and scroll-cap are to be painted wh3.te .
