Historic Districts Commission met at the time and place specified in the public
notice of the hearing on the application of Monument Realty Trust, John E. Boeing, Trustee,
for an amendment to Certificate of Appropriateness No. 183 with respect to changes in the
•exterior architectural features of the property at 18 Muzzey Street, which is within the
Battle Green District.
Present were Wilbur M. Jaquith, Chairman, Philip B. Parsons, Secretary, Ruth G. Bevan,
George E. Graves and Max H. Straw and Associate Commissioner George Emery.
The chairman read the notice of hearing and the letter of application. Mr. John E.
Boeing appeared in his own behalf and introduced his architect, Richard Morehouse of Morehouse,
Chesley and Thomas. Mr. Morehouse presented the commission with drawings showing the proposed
changes. Many questions were asked by the commission members. The hearing was adjourned at
7:55 P.I .
Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously VOTED to is sue an Amendment to
Certificate of Appropriateness to Monument Realty Trust, John E. Boeing, Trustee, with
respect to the exterior architectural features of the barn and additions thereon referred
to and described in Certificate No. 183 issued by the commission on November 17, 1966.
Hearing was held at 7:55 P.M. on the application of Marilyn Hamilton for a Certificate
of Appropriateness with respect to the erection of a dwelling at 204 Massachusetts Avenue,
which is within the Battle Green District.
The chairman read the notice of hearing and the letter of application. Mr. William H.
Hamilton introduced his wife, Marilyn Hamilton and architect Peter B. Carberry, and present d
the commission with scale drawings showing the four elevations and a plot plan. He also
showed the commission a sample of the shingles and the colors of paint to be used. Mr. ad
Mrs. Hamilton and Mr. Carberry answered many questions asked by the commission members.
Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Bayle appeared at the hearing as abuttors and asked many questions
but stated that they were primarily interested in the drainage problem. In order that the
architect would be able to make more detailed notations on drawings and that Mr. and Mrs
Hamilton would decide on colors, it was agreed to adjourn the hearing until Wednesday,
January 11, 1967, at 7:30 P.M. The hearing was adjourned at 8:50 P.M.
Hearing was held at 8:50 P.M. on the application of A. Damon Marshall for a Certificate
of Appropriateness with respect to the erection and display of a sign at 1736 Massachusetts
Avenue, whirls is within the Battle Green District.
The chairman read the notice of hearing and the letter of application. Mr. Noel G.
Posternak, Attorney, introduced A. Damon Marshall and Mr. Ginsberg. Mr. Ginsberg stated
that he is the sign man and submitted scale drawings and a sanple of the fabric to be used
in the sign. There was considerable discussion on the appropriateness of the plexiglass
in the district. It was agreed by the applicant that the sign shall be constructed of
wood aid that three copies of the drawings would be sent immediately to the commission.
Upon motion dily made and seconded, it was VOTED to issue a Certificate of Appropriateness
to A. Damon Marshall with respect to the erection and display of a sign on the building at
1736 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle Green District*
Mr. Jaquith stated that in view of a conflict of interest with regard to the following
three hearings, he was withdrawing from the meeting. George Emery was designated to serve
•s a member of the commission. Upon motion duly lade and secmded, it was VOTED that Max H.
Straw be Chairman Pro Tempore for the following three hearings,

exterior architectural features of the building being erected at 9 - 11 Meriam Street and for
a Certificate of Appropriateness with respect to the erection and display of three signs at
9 - 11 Meriam Street, which is within the Battle Green District.
Hearing was held on the application of Minute-man Publications, Inc., for a
Certificate of Appropriateness with respect to the erection and display of a sign at
4109 - 11 Meriam Street, which is within the Battle Green District.
Hearing was held on the application of Lester E. Savage for a Certificate of
APPropriateness with respect to the erection and display of a sign at 9 - 11 Meriam Street,
which is within the Battle Green District.
The chairman pro tempore read the notice of hearing. Mrs. Rebecca W. Adams appeared
in behalf of the application and stated that Charles H. Cole, Architect, had the information
required. Mr. Cole presented the commission with scale drawings of the proposed changes
and showed the commission the proposed signs to be used. Many questions were asked by
the commission members, and the hearings were adjourned at 10:20 P.J .
Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously VOTED to issue an Amendment to
Certificate of Appropriateness to Willard Adams Trust, Alan G. Adams et al Trustees, in
amendment of Certificate of Appropriateness No. 169 which was issued to Alan G. Adams and
Rebecca W. Adams under date of May 26, 1966, with respect to changes in the exterior
architectural features of the building being erected at 9 - 11 Meriam Street, which is
within the Battle Green District.
Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate
of Appropriateness to Willard Adams Trust, Alan G. Adams et al Trustees, with respect to
the erection and display of three signs at 9 - 11 Meriam Street, which is within the
Battle Green District.
Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate of
Appropriateness to Minute-man Publications, Inc., with respect to the erection and die) lay
of a sign at 9 - 11 Meriam Street, which is within the Battle Green District.
Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate of
Appropriateness to Lester E. Savage with respect to the erection ani display of a sign d,
9 - 11 Meriam Street, which is within the Battle Green District.
Mr. Jaquith returned to the meeting ad stated that he had received revised scale
drawings of the proposed sign to be used by Charles H. Cole and Leslie H. York ar
1775 Massachusetts Avenue. There was some discussion.
Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate
of Appropriateness to Charles H. Cole 2nd and Leslie H. York with respect to the erection
and display of a directory sign at 1775 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle
Green District.
The chairman stated that he had requested $975.00 for 1967. The commission unanimously
approved the payment of outstanding bills to Elizabeth Adam and Minute-man Publications.
The chairman stated that he had placed as advertisement in the January 5th issue df the
Minute-man with regard to the application of Lexington Federal Savings and Loan Association
for the erection of signs. Hearing will be held at 7:30 P.M. January 19.

browse Roman letters one foot high and approximately } Inch thick being attached
to the building at a one-inch offset per letter located on the field of the
gabled pediment as shown on a plan bearing the legend "Adams Bide and date of
14-67 snbmittsd to the oomiaission at the hearing held on January tc, 1967.
Sign Number Two and Three shall be comprised of a first-floor directory sign to
be installed on tie Mariam Street face of the building at the left of the main
entrance and a second-floor directory sign to be installed at the right side
of the main entrance. Zech sign shall be of colonial design, cede of wood having
a central sign panel 214 inches wide and 30 inches high being framed by a molding
of a pattern number 81471. Each sign shall have a scroll type cap eleven finches
high and a bottom scallopped panel 541 inches xids. The building occupants shall
be identified on replaceable panel strips approximately one inch wide painted whits
with black letters 3/14" high and spaced approximately two inches apart vertically
with an allowance of six lines of directory legend per edgn. The entire sign
shall be white and all letters shall be black. The names on t he replaceable
panels nay be substituted without further epplioation to the emmie'ion. Signs
Two end Three shall be of the form ani style and located as shown on the
above-referred plan "Adams Bldg." l4-67.

AMENDMINT TO OEST FICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS
This amendment to Certificate is issued pursuant to Chapter W47, Aets of Massachusetts,
1956, as amended, to Willard Adams Trust, Alan O. ,dams, et ale Trustees, in amendment
of Certificate of Appropriateness No. 169 which was issued to Alan O. Adams and Rebecca W.
Adaas under date of May 26, 1966, with respect to changes in the exterior arehltestural
features of the building being erected as noted below, at 9 . 11 Weriae Street, which is
within the Battle Orson District.
Th changes in exterior details include the followings
1. To change the location of two air-conditioning units an the erica Street
elevation, seoond-floor level, from the earlier approved location to a
position beneath the outer windows under the covered portico.
2. With reference to the roar elevation, the addition of two windows on each
floor located at the right half of the elevation
3. The installation on the rear elevation immediately to the loft of the most left
second-floor window of a done cover for a ventilator fan 21 inches in diameter and
projecting about 12 inches fro* the face of the building and bet ng fabricated of
bright alusinue.
The exterior dimensions, the proposed locations of the changes and the exterior shape
and detail all appear or are looser ed on a drawing entitled "Elevations Adams Building
Sheet A.li Charles H. Cole II Arehitect" scale 1/8" . 1', dated August 12, 1966, revised
1.4.67, which was submitted b =emissionth =emissionat the hearing 31 January , 1967.

This amendment to certificate is issued pursuant to Chapter 447, Lets of Massachusetts,

The amendment to said certificate consists of the following change■ in said exterior
architectural features as shwa on Sheets 1, 3, 4, 5 end 6 of drawings entitled "Alterations
to the Prop*rty of Monument Realty Trust 18 Mnxscy St., Lexington, Mass. Itor.houss, Chesley
& Thomas, Architects, dated October 15, 1966, as finally revised either on December 15, 1966,
or January 3, 196E, submitted to tis coomission at the hearing on January 4, 1967:
1. Enlargement of barn addition on easterly side.
2. Installation of wooden louvers in the peaks of the north and south elevations of the barn.
3. Elimination of window in peak on south elevation of barn and east elevation of barn
addition.
L. Addition of windows on first floor level of south and north elevations of barn addition.
5. Elimination of all skylights in barn roof.
6. Installation of air conditioning unit below second floor window of north elevation havitg
aids vents and with north side of unit covered with clapboard painted off-white to
match the color of tie barn, entire unit and clapboard siding not to extend more thin
eight inches from elevation wall.
7. Installation of air conditioning unit above bulkhead on east elevation to be painted
an off-white color to match color of barn.
