The Historic Districts Commission met at the time and place specified in the public
n ce of the hearing on the application of Lexington Federal Savings and Loan Association
for a Permit to Demolish the buildings located at 1832 - 1838 Massachusetts Avenue, which
is wi thin. the Battle Green District.
Present were Wilbur M. Jaquith, Chairman, Philip B. Parsons, Secretary, George E. Graves,
Ruth G. Bevan and Max H. Straw and Association Commissioners Carl E. Bryant and Donald B.
White. Mr. Bryant and Mr. White represented Commissioners Bevan and Straw on the first
two hearings.
The chairman read the notice of hearing and the letter of application. Mr. Gardner
Ferguson of Lexington Federal Savings and Loan Association and Mr. Whitten of Hutchins &
French, Architect, of Boston, represented the applicant and answered questions asked by t he
commission meters.
Upon motion duly nude and seconded, it was unanimously VOTED to issue a Permit for
Demolition to Lexington Federal Savings & Loan Association for the demolition of the
present buildings at 1832 - 1838 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle Green
District„
The chairman read the notice of the hearing on the application of Lexington Federal
Savings and Loan Association for a Certificate of Appropriateness with respect tochanges
in the exterior architectural features of the buildings and to changes in the signs on the
buildings at 1832 - 1840 Massachusetts, which is within the Battle Green District.
The chairman stated that due to an error in the legal notice advertisement, the hearing
will be adjourned until Wednesday, December 14. However, since the applicatit was present
at the hearing, it was agreed that the scale drawings of the proposed building be shown to
the commission members and those present.
Hearing was held at 8:50 P.M. on the application of J. Q. Rush for a Certificate of
Appropriateness with respect to the removal of the sign at 1736 Massachusetts Avenue and
the erection of is sign at 14 Waltham Street, which is within the Battle Green District.
The chairman read the notice of hearing and the letter of application. Mr. Rush was
present in his own behalf and presented the commission with a sample of the type of letter
to be used on the sign as well as photographs showing the original sign and the proposed
location of the sign on V'Jaltham Street. Many questions were asked Mr. Rush and it was
agreed that Mr. Rush plan to meet on December 14 with the commission and to present a
scale drawing of the proposed dign at that time.
Hearing was held on the application of Felix Realty Trust for a Certificate of
Appropriateness with respect to changes in the exterior architectural features of the
building at 1806 - 1810 Massachusetts Avenue on the corner of Muzzey Street, which is within
the Battle Green District,
The chairman read the notice of hearing and the letter of application. Mr. Earle B.
Street of Street and Co., Inc., was present in behalf of the applicant. The scale drawing of
the proposed changes in the building was discussed and questions were asked Mr. Street„
Tohearing was adjourned at 9:40 P.M.
Upon motion duly made and seconded, it wasunanimously VOrED to issue a Certificate of
Appropriateness to Trustees of Felix Realty Trust with respect to changesinthe
exterior architectural features of the building at 1806 - 1810 Massachusetts Avenue on the
corner of Muzzey Street, within the Battle Green District.,
Hearing was held on the application of Monument Realty Trust, John E. Boeing, Trustee,
for a Permit to Demolish a portion of the buildings at 18 Muzzey Street, which is within the
Battle Green Didrict.

The chairman read the notice of hearing and the letter of application. Mr. Bog ng
appeared in his own behalf and presented the commission with a scale drawing of the
oposed demolition. Questions were asked by the commission members and the hearing was
journed at 10:00 P.M.
Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously VOTED to issue a Permit for
Demolition of Existing Buildings to John E. Boeing, Trustee, Monument Realty Trust,
for the demolition of the present garage building at 18 Muzzey Street located between
the existing dwelling and the barn at 18 Muzzey Street, which is within the Battle Green
District.
Hearing was held at 10:00 P.M. on the application of Trustees of the 1775 Realty
Trust for aCertificate of Appropriateness with respect to the amendment to Certificate
of Appropriateness No. 157, as amended by Certificate of Appropriateness No. 170,
previously issued with respect to the erection of a one story building on the lot which
is bounded southwesterly by Massachusetts Avenue and northwesterly by Depot Square,
which is within the Battle Green District.
The chairman read the notice of hearing and the letter of application. Appearing in
behalf of 1775 Realty Trust were Mr. Frederick Conroy and Charles H. Cole, Architect, who
presented the commission with scale drawings of the proposed changes. Questions were
asked by the commission members. The hearing was adjourned at 10:25 P.M.
Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously VOTED to issue an Amendment
to Certificate of Appropriateness to Hugo Naienza, James Stevens, Joseph Trani, Trustees
of the 1775 Realty Trust with respect to the exterior architectural features of the one stow
building referred to and described in Certificate No. 157 issued by the commission on
February 5, 1966, and amended by Certificate No. 170 issued by the commission on May 26, 1966.
Mr. William Hamilton of Asbury Street, appeared before the commission asked the
procedure to obtain a certificate of appropriateness and if a foundation could be built
before the certificate was issued. Mr. Hamilton stated that he would write a letter
to the commission requesting a hearing.
The chairman stated that he had received a call from Parker Hirtle, Chairman of
the Building Committee of the First Parish Church, asking for an informal meeting with the
commission. It was agreed that the commission would meet with Mr. Hirtle at 7:30 P.M'
on lednesday, December7 in the Town Accountant' s Room.
The chairman stated that he has reijuested a "Transfer of F unds" from the Board of
Selectmen in order to pay the 1966 bills. Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was VOTED
that the commission pay the outstanding bills of Minute Man Publications, Inc., and
Elizabeth Adam for work through August 31, 1966.

of Massachusetts, 1956, as amended, to Lexington Federal Savings and Loan Association

which are attached to the existing building at 1840 Massachusetts Avenue, which is
within the Battle Green District.

AMERDVENT TO CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS
This amendment to certificate is issued pursuant to Chapter 447, Acts of
Wassaohusetts, 1956, es amended, to Hugo Waimea, James Stevens, Joseph T rani, Trustees
of the 1775 Realty Trust with respect to the exterior architectural features of the
one-story building referred to and described in Certificate No. 157 issued by the
commission on February 5, 1966, and amended by Certificate No. 170 issued by the
Commission on May 26, 1966.
The snendment to said certificate Wo. 157 consists of changes in the roof, the
addition of a covered passageway between said building and the building at 1775
Massachneetts Avenue, and the substitution of a pedestrian door on the rear elevation .•
of said one-story building for the overhead door shown on drawings previously
submitted to the commission in connection with Certificates No. 157 and No. 170.
The changes all are shown on a revised drawing entitled "Elevations New Store Bldg.
for 1775 Realty Trust, 1777 Mass. Ave. Lexington, Mass." Charles H. Cole 2nd Architect,
dated November 8, 1966, whiohw as submitted to the commission at the hearing held on
November 30, 1966. The woodwork of the covered passageway is to be painted a barn
red to match as nearly as possible the red color of the building at 1775 Massachusetts
Avenue. The woodwork of the new pedestrian door and framing is to be painted White.

CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS
This certificate is issued pursuant to Chapter 447, Acts of Massachusetts,
1956, as amended, to Trustees of Felix Realty Trust with respect to changes in the
exterior architectural features of the building as noted belowat 1806 — 1810 Mass—
achusetts Avenue on the corner of Mussey Street, which is within the Battle Green
District,
The Changes consist of replacing the present cornice over tht front of the
Lexitg ton Cleaners and T heatre Camera stores on Massachusetts Avenue ami the cornice
on the luesey Street Bide of the latter store with an enlarged wooden cornice
and lighting fixtures recessed in the new cornice.
The design, layout, dimensions, types of building materials and the location of
the lighting fixtures all appear on a revised drawing entitled "Alterations to
Building Massachusetts Avenue corner Mux say Str ;et, Lexington, lass. Felix Realty
Trust Owners" dated July 16, 1965 and revised October 19, 1966, by C. Harry
Erickson, Architect, which was suboitted to the commission at the hearing on
November 30, 1966.
All woodwork of the new cornice is to be painted the same shade of off-white color
as the other w odwork of the building. The lighting fixtures include single
tulip/florescent lamps of odium light intensity.
