HomeMy WebLinkAbout1966-11-09 November 9, 1966 • The Historic Districts Commission met at the time and place specified in the public notice of the hearing on the application of First Parish Church for a Certificate of Appropriateness with respect to the erection of a building on land contiguous to the church building premises on Harrington Road, which is within the Battle Green District. Present were Wilbur M. Jaquith, Chairman, Philip B. r'arsons, Secretary, George E. Graves and Associate Commissioners Carl E. Bryant and Donald B. White. The chairman asked the commission members to use a "check list" on the hearings this evening and to make recommendations on its usefulness in preparing certificates. He further stated that he had received a letter from the Board of Selectmen stating that two new Associate Members had been appointed to the commission: George Emery and Monroe Hamilton. The chairman read the notice of hearing and the letter of application received from the chairman of the Building Committee of the First Parish Church. He further stated that the commission had met informally with the Building Committee on two occasions. Mr. Parker Hirtle, Chairman of the Building Committee and Mr. Bednarski, Architect of 318 Main Street, Greenfield, were present in behalf of the applicant and submitted three sets of drawings and a rendering to the commission. The commission members asked.many questions and viewed slides of the property in question. Mr. John Blackwell and John Sampson, 8 Bedford Str et, members of the church, spoke in favor of the application. No one else wishing to be heard, the hearing was adjourned at 9:45 Y.M. The commission discussed the application in question and agreed to adjourn the hearing until 7:30 P.M. on Wednesday, November 16, 1966, in the Selectmen' s Room. In the meantime they will view the site in question. Hearing was held at 9:45 P.M. on the application of Monument Realty Trust, John E. Hoeing, Trustee, for a Certificate of Appropriateness with respect to changes in the exterior architectural features of the property and the erection of signs on the premises at 18 Muzzey Street, which is within the Battle Green District. The chairman stated that Max H. Straw and Donald B. White will act on this application. The chairman read the notice ofhearing and the letter of application dated October 17, 1966. Mr. John E. Boeing and his architect, Mr. Peter Thomas, were present in behalf of the application and showed the commission drawings of the proposed alterations and signs. Many questions were asked, and the hearing was adjourned at 10:50 P.M. Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate of Appropriateness to Monument Realty Trust, John E. Boeing, Trustee, with respect to the erection and display of a directory sign at 18 Muzzey Street, which is within the Battle Green District. The commission agreed that further action would be taken with regard to the exterior architectural features of the property after discussion at its meeting on November 16, 1966, The chairman stated that maps are now available for the new Historic Districts. He stated that he had reports to m ake for 1966, including the Town Report, Budget andapace requirements. More discussion in th' : '11be eld at the next meeting. Boeing, Trustee, with respect to the erection and display of a directory sign as noted below, at 18 Muszey Street, which is within the Battle Green District. The sign is to be located northerly of the front door on the front elevation of the house, and the bottom of the sign is to be approximately four feet above the piazza floor. The sign is to contain five changeable panels above which is to appear the following legends "18 Mkasey Street". The design, layout and dimensions of the sign and the styling of lettering appear on a drawing submitted to the commission at the hearing held on November 9, 1966. The panels ars to be painted white, and the border of the sign and the letters are to b e black. The names on the changeable panels may be aubstitued without further application to the commission to change the names of tenants as required from time to time.
