The Historic Districts Commission met at the time and place specified in the
public notice of the hearing on the application of the Board of Selectmen for a
Certificate of Appropriateness with respect to the erection and display of two signs
on the Buckman Tavern grounds, which is within the Battle Green District.
Present were Wilbur M. `'aquith, Chairman, Philip B. Parsons, Secretary, Ruth G.
Bevan, Max H. Straw and Associate Commissioner Donald B. White. also present at the
following hearings were Lee E. Tarbox of the Chamber of Commerce, Leslie York of the
Public Facilities Committee and Mrs. George P. Morey of the Lexington Historical
Society.
The chairman read the notice of hearing. Mr. Robert Cataldo of the Board of
Selectmen appeared in behalf of the Town of Lexington and presented the commission
with scale drawings of the proposed sign and showed the commission photographs of the
sign at the proposed locations. Many questions were asked Mr. Cataldo and the hearing
was adjourned at 8:45 P.M.
Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously VOTED to issue a
Certificate of Appropriateness to Town of Lexington with respect to the erection and
display of two signs by the applicant on the Buckman Tavern grounds on Massachusetts
Avenue and Bedford Street, which is within the Battle Green District.
Hearing was held at 8:45 P.M. on the application of The Board of Selectmen for
a Certificate of Appropriateness with respect to the construction of a temporary,
experimental stretch of sidewalk to be located in the vicinity of the new Tourists,
Center, which is within the Battle Green District.
The chairman read the notice of hearing and Mr. Catalde represented the Board
of 6electmen on this application and showed the commission the Warren Bros. Roads
Co: pony sample of the proposed asphalt to be used in this sidewalk. The commission
members asked questions, and the hearing was adjourned at 9:05 P.M.
Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate
of Appropriateness to Town of Lexington with respect to the construction of a
temporary experimental sidewalk on the Buckman Tavern grounds on Massachusetts Avenue,
which is within the Battle Green District.
Hearing was held at 9:05 P.M. on the application of Lexington Chamber of
Commerce for a Certificate of Appropriateness for the removal of the Information
Building located on the Buckman Tavern property at the junction of Meriam Street and
Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle Green District.
The chairman read the notice of hearing and Mr. Lee E. Tarbox of the Lexington
Chamber of Commerce appeared in its behalf. Mr. Tarbox stated that the Information
Building was no longer needed in view of the new building. Mr. Cataldo stated that
the Board of Selectmen were unanimously in favor of its removal. Questions were asked
by the commission, and the hearing was adjourned at 9:10 P. E.
Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously VOTED to issue a Permit
for Removal to Lexington Chamber of Comnerce for the removal of the Information Building
located on the Buckman Tavern grounds at the intersection of Meriam Street and
Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle Green District.
Hearing was held at 9:10 P.M. on the application of The Lexington Historical
society for a Certificate of Appropriateness with respect to the maintenance of a sign
on its preoprty at 36 Hancock Street, which is within the Hancock—Clarke District.

• Mr. Lawrence Whipple, chairman of the Levelepment Committee appeared in
behalf of the Historical Society and presented the commission with a sketch of the sign.
Mr. Whipple answered many questions and the hearing was adjourned at 9 20 P.M.
Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously VOTED to issue a
Certificate of Appropriateness to Lexington Historical Society, Inc., with respect to
the erection and display of a temporary sign at the original site of the ''ancock-
Clarke House at 36 Hancock Street, which is within the Hancock-Clarke District.
The chairman read the notice of hearing on the application of Baker' s of
Lexington, Inc. for a Certificate of Appropriateness with respect to the display of a
sign and the erection of awnings on the premises at 21 Depot Square, which is within
the Battle Green District.
The chairman read the letter of application dated July 1, 1966, and received
July 12. The chairman stated that prior to July first, Mr. Baker called Mrs. Adam,
the clerk, and asked what was required in order to erect a sign at his new location.
The clerk stated that it would be necessary to write a letter of application to the
commission and at that time it would be advertised for public hearing. Mrs. Adam
stated that earlier this evening Maurice Baker had called her and informed her that
Gabriel Baker was in California and unable to be present at the hearing. Since
Maurice Baker did not have the information available, he asked the clerk if it would
be possible to adjourn the hearing until a later date.
Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously VOTED to postpone
action on this application to a date to be set by the chairman. The date suggested
was Thursday, September B, 1966.
The chairman stated that he had received a letter from the Board of Selectmen
to withdraw their application for a certificate of appropriateness for a sign at
the corner of Meriam Street and Massachusetts Avenue. Upon motion duly made and
seconded, it was unanimously VOTED to withdraw the application.

This certificate is issued purwaant to Chapter 447, Asti of Yassaohnrette,
1956, as emended, to Town of Loxicgton with respect to the erection and display
of tan signs b, the applicant on the Buckman Tavern grenade as noted below, on

The address of the building is not to appear on the sign. Permission is granted to
change the legend of the sign from tins to ties to substitute different open hours.
The second sign is tabs hong by a bracket on the easterly side of the ale tree

Facilities building with Medford Street. The style and dimensions of the sign and
the style and else of lettering appear on Sketch F2 outwitted at the hearing and

This certificate is issued pursuant to Chapter 447, Acts of Nassachueotts, 1956,
�s emended, to Tam of Lexington with respect to the construction of a temporary
u ge.xlaantal sidewalk as noted below, en the Bu$kman Tavern grounds on Massachusetts
.Avenue, which is within the Battle Green District.
The location if the temporary walk is to be that portion of the existing walk leading
fres the present brick sidewalk in front of the Visitors Center to the intersection
of the two diagonal walks leading fres Massachusetts Avenue and Bedford Street
respectively and is to be not wider than the existing walk. The walk is to be constructed
of a colored pavement sim»ar to the Marren Bros,' Roads Company dark rod sample which
was submitted at the hearing. The top surface, approximately 3/4 inch thick is to be of a red
color matching as near as possible the foregoing sample.
This certificate is issued subject to the condition that the temporary walk shall not
be maintained after a period of two years commencing with the date of this certificate
without further approval by the Gammiasien.

This certificate ie issued pursuant to Chapter 447, Acts of Mtssssohaeetts, 1956,
as amended, to Lexington Historical Society, Inc., with respect to the erection and
display of a temporary sign at the original site of the Hancock-Clark. House as noted
below, at 36 Hancock Street, which is within the Hancock-Clarke District.
The exterior dimensions of the sign are approximately 41 inches long by 25 inches high,
and the sign is rectangular in shape. The sign is to be erected on two wooden pests
2" by 3". The location of the sign is to be near the site of the front door of the house
approximately twelve feet fres the Hancock Street let line and in (rent of a clump of
lilac bushes. The top of the sign is to be not more than 41 inches fres the ground. The
sign and posts are to be painted white, the seal of the Historical Society is to be located
above the legend and painted black, and the following legend io to appear in black letters;
