HomeMy WebLinkAbout1966-08-04 August 4, 1966 The Historic Districts Commission met at the time and place specified in the public nstice of the hearing on the application of the Board of Selectman for a Certificate of Appropriateness with respect to the erection and display of two signs ®n the Buckman Tavern grounds, which is within the Battle Green 1~istrict. Present were wTilbur `~aquith, Chairman, Philip B. Parsons, Secretary, Ruth Cr. Bevan, Max H. Straw and Associate C®m~rdssioner Donald B. Afhite, also present at the fsll~ring hearings were Lee E. Tarbox of the Chamber of Commerce, Leslie York of the Public Facilities Committee and Mrs. Ge®rge P. Mercy of the Lexington Historical Society. The chairman read the notice of hearing. Mr. Robert Cataldo of the Board of Selectmen appeared in behalf of the Town of Lexington and presented the commission with scale drawings of the proposed sign and showed the commissi®n photographs of the sign at the proposed locations. Many questions were asked Mr. Cataldo and the hearing xas adjourned at 8:115 P.~b. Upon motion duly mach and seconded, it was unanimously VOTF,D to issue a Ce rtificato of Appropriateness to Town of Lexington with respect to the erection and display of two signs by the applicant on the Buckman Tavern grounds on Me.ssachusetta Avenue and Bedford Street, which is within the Battle Green District. Hearing was held at 8115 P. BE. on the application of The Hoard of Selectmen for a Certificate of Appropriateness with respect to the construction of a temporary, experimental stretch of sidewalk to be located in the vicinity of the neer Tourists' Center, which is within the Battle Green District. The chairman read the notice of hearing aYxt !I~r. Catald© represented the Board of ~alectmen on this application and showed the commission the 4Parren Bros. Roads Co.rpany sample of the proposed asphalt to be used in this sidewalk. The commission members asked questions, and the hearing was adjourned at 9s05 P.?3. Upen m©tion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificato of Approg~iateness to Torn of Lexington with respect to the construction of a temporary experimental sidewalk on the Buckman Tavern grounds on Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle Green District. Hearing was held at 9x05 P.ird. on the application of Lexington Chamber of C®mmerce for a Certificato of Appropriateness for the removal of the Information Building located on the Buckman Tavern property at the junction mf Meriam Street and Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle Green vistrict. The chairman road the notice of hearing and Mr. Lee E. Tarbox of the Lexington Chamber of Commerce appeared in its behalf. Mr. Tarbox stated that the Information Building was no longer needed in view of the now building. Mr. Cataldo stated that the 13oaxd of Selectmen were unanimously in favor of its removal. 4uestions were asked by the commission, and the hearing was adjourned at 9s10 P.~E, Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously VOTED tea issue a Permit for Removal to Lexington chamber of Commerce for the removal of the Information Building located on the Buckman Tavern grounds at the intersection of Meriam Street and Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle Green District. Hearing was held at 9s10 P. M, on the application of The Lexington Historical Society for a Certificate of Appropriateness with respect to the maintenance of a sign on its preoprty at 36 Hancock Street, which is within the Hancock-Clarke District. Mr. ~hippla ans+rered many questions and the hearing was adjourned at 9:20 P.?~~. Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanim®usly VOTED to issue a Certificate of ppprotr iateness to Lexington Historical Society, Inc., with respect to the erecti®n and display of a temporary sign at the on anal site of the ''ancock- Clarke House at 36 Hancock Street, which is within the ~ncock-Clarke District. The chairman read the notice of hearing on the application of Bakers of Lexington, Inc. for a Certificate of Appropriateness with respect to the display of a sign and the erection of awnings on the premises at 21 Depot Square, which is within the Battle C*reen District. The chairman read the letter of application dated July 1, 1966, and received July 12. The chairman stated that prior to July first, Mr. Baker called Mrs. Adam, the clerk, and asked what was required in order to erect a sign at his new location. The clerk stated that it would be necessary to write a letter of application to the commission and at that time it would be advertised for public hearing. Mrs. Adam stated that earlier tr is evening Maurice Baker had called her and informed her that Gabriel Baker was in California and unable to be present at the hearing. Since Maurice Baker did not have the information available, he asked the clerk if it would be possible to adjourn the hearing until a later date. Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously VOTED to postpone action on this application to a date to be set by the chairman. The date suggested was Thursday, September 1966. The chairman s toted that he had received a Iet'ter from the Board of Selectmen to withdraw their application for a certificate of appropriateness for a sign at the corner of Meriam Street and Massachusetts Avenue.
