HomeMy WebLinkAbout1966-05-25 1 ' May 25, 1966 The Historic Districts Commission met at the time and place specified in the • public notice of the hearing on the application of The Church of Our Redeemer for a Certificate of Appropriateness with respect to the construction of a paved parking area with gates and appurtenances on its property at Mariam Street and t'atriots Drive, which is within the Battle Green District. Present were Donald R. Grant, Chairman, Philip B. earsons, Secretary, Ruth G. Bevan, George E. Graves and Wilbur M. Jaquith and Associate Commissioner Max H. Straw. The chairman read the letter received from Robert A. Bittenbender, Junior Warden of The Church of Our Redeemer. Mr. Bittenbender was present in behalf of the application and presented the commission with a plot plan showing the areas to be paved. Many questions were asked by the commission members. The hearing was adjourned at 8:15 P.M. Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was VOTED to issue a certificate of appropriateness to The Church of Our Redeemer with respect to certain sidewalks, a parking lot, certain plantings and grass areas and certain gate posts and chain to be located between the rear of the existing church structures on the southwesterly side of Meriam Street and the rear property line of the church on Hancock Street, which is within the Battle Green District. Hearing was held at 8:15 P.M. on the application of Trustees of the 1775 Realty Trust for a Certificate of Appropriateness with respect to the amendment to Certificate of Appropriateness No. 157 previously issued with respect to the erection of a one story building on the lot which is bounded southwesterly by Massachusetts Avenue and north- westerly by Depot Square, which is within the Battle Green District. Present in behalf of the applicants were Charles H. Cole, Architect, and Frederick J. Conroy, Attorney. Mr. Cole submitted to the commission a scale drawing showing the four elevations of the building. Many questions were asked and the hearing was adjourned at 8:30 P.M. Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was VOTED to issue- an amendment to certificate of appropriateness to Hugo Maiensa, James Stevens, Joseph Trani, Trustees of the 1775 Realty Trust with respect to the exterior architectural features of the one-story building referred to and described in Certificate No. 157 issued by the Commission under date of February 5, 1966. Present at the meeting was Mr. Paul Aoyd of Niles Company, agents of Battle Green Apartments. Mr. Boyd introduced Mr. and Mrs. Sundhauss, residents of the apartments. Mr. Boyd stated complaints regarding the appearance of the Stop & Shop buildings and showed the commission photographs. The chairman stated that only the signs on the Worthen Road side of the building came under the jurisdiction of the Historic Districts Commission, and the commission would contact Stop & Shop in this regard. Mr. Jaquith read the letter received from Street & Company with regard to alterations to the building at 1810 Massachusetts. It was agreed that the chairman write a letter to Mr. Btreet indicating that a public hearing would be necessary. Upon motion duly mAde and seconded, it was VOTED that Ruth G. Bevan be Chairman Pro Tempore for further consideration of the application of Alan G. Adams and Rebecca . Adams with respect to the proposed building at 9 — 11 Mariam Street. Mr. Jaquith withdrew from the meeting and from any consideration of this application. In his absence Mr. Grant designated Mr. Straw to isit in his place. t,n a5, 14 GG 411 Mrs. Bevan stated that Charles H. Cole, Architect, had left with her three copies of the scale drawings of the proposed building with specifications listed. Discussion was held with regard to the proposed building. Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was VOTED to issue a Permit for Demolition to Alan G. Adams and Rebecca W. Adams for the demolition of the existing building at 9 - 11 Meriam Street, which is within the Battle Green District. Mr. Grant did not vote on this application. Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was VOTED to issue a Certificate of Appropriateness to Alan G. Adams and Rebecca W. Adams with respect to the erection of a two—story building at 9 - 11 Meriam Stre4, which is within the Battle Green District. Mr. Grant did not vote on this application. Mr. Grant stated that an application for a certificate of appropriateness had been received from the Town of Lexington with respect to the erection of a new sign on the corner of Meriam Street and Massaca. usetts Avenue.
