HomeMy WebLinkAbout1966-02-16 February 16, 1966 The Historic Districts Commission met at the time and place specified in the public alhotice of the hearing on the application of Minute Man Park Realty Trust for a Certificate mUf Appropriateness with respect to the demolition and removal of the buildings located at 1833 - 1851 Massachusetts Avenue, 1 - 3 Meriam Street and 21 - 31 Depot Square, which is within the Battle Green District. Present were Wilbur M. Jaquith, Philip B. Parsons, Secretary, Ruth G. Bevan, George E. Graves and Associate Commissioners Max H. Straw and Donald B. White. The chairman being absent from the meeting, motion was duly made and seconded and unanimously VOTED That Wilbur M. Jaquith be Chairman Pro Tempore for the meeting. The chairman Pro Tempore stated that he represented Mr. and Mrs. Alan Adams regarding their legal matters, and they now own the Smith property adjacent to the above applicant. The applicants stated that they did not have an objection to Mr. Jaquith' s serving on the commission on the above application. The Chairman Pro Tempore read the letter dated January 13, 1966, and the notice of hearing. Mr. Ernest A. Giroux represented the applicants in this regard and introduced Mr. Blair Perry, their attorney, of Hale & Dorr, who stated that he is now working with the town counsel in this regard. Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously VOTED to issue a Permit for Demolition to the Trustees of Minute Man Park Realty Trust for the demolition of the existing buildings at 1833 - 1859 Massachusetts Avenue, 1 - 3 Meriam Street, and 21 - 31 Depot Square, which are within the Battle Green District. Hearing was held on the application of Minute Man Park Realty Trust for a Certificate of Appropriateness with respect to the erection of a building to be located on property bounded by Massachusetts Avenue, Meriam Street, Depot Square and Depot Place, which is within the Battle Green District. The Chairman Pro Tempore read the letter of application dated January 13, 1966, and the Notice of hearing. The chairman also stated that the applicant has been before the commission on numerous occasions to discuss details of the building. Mr. Robert Neiley of Bastille-Neilley Architects showed the commission a scale drawing of the four elevations of the building, a floor plan showing the proposed doorways, a rendering, and sample: of the shingles brick and paint colors to be used in the proposed building. Many questions were asked Ar. Aeiley, Mr. Perry, Mr. Giroux and Mr. Matheson by the commission members. The chairman asked if any one present at the hearing would like to comment regarding the proposed building. Mr. and Mrs. Alan Adams, Mr. Herbert Bogan, Mr. Norman Fletcher and Mr. Frank Crosby stated that they were in favor of the application. Mr. Robert Bittenbender stated that he represented the Church of Our Redeemer and that he felt the design was rather radical in comparison to the Church of Our Redeemer building and the Battle Green. The hearing was adjourned at 9:25 P.M. Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously VOTED to grant a Certificate of Appropriateness to Ernest A. Giroux and William T. Welsh, Trustees of Minute Man Park ity Trust with respect to the erection of a one-story building on the land which is ded by Massachusetts Avenue, Meriam Street, Depot Place and Depot Square, which is within the Battle Green District. The meeting was adjourned at 11:15 Philip B. Parsons Secretary CERTIFICATE of APPROPRIATENESS This certificate is issued pursuant to Chapter 1+117, Acts and Resolveā–  of Massachusetts, 1956, as ascended, to Ernest A. Giroux and William T. Welsh, Trustees of Minute Man Park Realty Trust with respect to the erection of a one-story building on the land which is bounded by Massachusetts Avenue, Mariam Street, Depot Place and Depot Square, as noted below, which is within the Battle Green District. The exterior vertical dimensions of the building, the proposed locations of doorways and windows, the exterior shape of the building, the loading bay and loading doorways all appear or are located on a drawing entitled "Zlevations New Building for the Minute Man Park Realty Trust, Lexington, Massachusetts, Bastille-Wiley Architects, Scale 1/8" = 1' dated 2/15/66" and the horisontal dimensions of the building, windows and doorways appear on a floor plan entitled "New Central Block Lexington Massachusetts for the Minute flan Park Realty Trust Bastille-Neiley Architects as revised 2/16/66", scale 1/8" = 1' and submitted to the commission at the hearing on February 16, 1966, The design of the various elevations and of the windows, doors, doorways and the loading d ,orways and of all roofs and other exterior features all appear on the first of the aforementioned drawings entitled "Elevations". The brick to be used is to be the sae as the sample of Sand Melded Colonial Face Brick Machine Made Rose Full shads submitted to the commission at the hearing on February 16, 1966. All gutters, the wood .fascia and other wood trim are to b e painted a shade of off-white to match the sample marked "Vanih1s#2557" submitted at the hearing. The glass in the doors, other than the leading doors, is to be of the style known as "bullssye", and these doors are to be painted a shade of green to match the sample marked "D1145Chive" submitted at the hearing. The loading doors are to be painted a color matching as nearly as possible the color of the brick in the elevations. The metal sash and frames of the windows are to be painted a dark green. The roofs of all four elevations appearing on the drawing marked "Elevations" are to be covered with colerbestos slate, Inverness green color of the type a sample of which was submitted to the commission at the hearing. The gray slate facing beneath the windows on all four elevations is to be of the type and color submitted to the commission at the hearing. Floodlights for the loading area may be installed provided that the location and design of the floodlights are submitted to the commission for its approval before installation.
