HomeMy WebLinkAbout1966-02-02 Y 6 February 2, 1966 The Historic Districts Commission met ,t the time and place specified in the public •"notice of the hearing on the application of The Greek Orthodox Church of Lexington for a Certificate of Appropriateness with respect to the erection of a sign at the corner of Meriam Street, and Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle Green District. ?resent were Donald R. Grant, Chairman, Philip B. rarsons, Secretary, Ruth Bevan, George E. Graves and Associate Commissioners Donald B. White and Max H. ''traw. The chairman read the letter of application received from Mr. Nicholas Prasinos, Attorney for The Greek Orthodox Church. Present in behalf of the applicafrt was Dr. Charles Mooney, 1145 Massachusetts Avenue, who showed the commission the proposed sign intended to be placed at the above location. questions were asked Dr. Mooney by the commission members. Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate of Appropriateness to Greek Orthodox Church of Lexington with respect to the erection and display of a sign which is to be located on the present street sign pole on the northeast corner of the junction of Meriai Street and Massachusetts Avenue and immediately below the sign which presently appears on said pole, which is within the Battle Green District. Hearing was held on the application of Lloyd D. Tarlin, Trustee of Athens Realty Trust, for amendment of an existing certificate of appropriateness for the installation of an exterior pick—up conveyor and for a change in signs for tae premix s which front on both Bedford Street and Worthen Road, which is within the Battle Green District. Due to Mr. Grant' s conflict of interest on this application, Ruth G. Bevan was unanimously elected Chairman ?re Tempore. Mrs. Bevan read the letter of application dated January 10, 1966, from John W. Silva, Manager, planning and Engineering Department. Mr. Silva appeared in behalf of Stop & Shop and showed the commission sketches of the proposed signs and the conveyor to be used in connection with their new store. Mr, David Sawyer of University Sign Company was also present and presented the commission with the samples of plexiglas to be used in the signs. Many questions were asked by the commission members and the hearing was adjourned at 8:40 P.P . Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate of Appropriateness to Trustees of Athens Realty Trust with respect to the erection and display of signs on the property which faces both Bedford Street and Worthen Road and for the installation of an exterior pick—up conveyor on these premises, which is within the Battle Green District. This certificate amends and modifies Certificate N . 137 in so far as said certificate pertained to signs to be erected by the applicant. Mr. Grant stated that he had received a letter from Henri Hairstylists, Inc. requesting a certificate of appropriateness. Hearing will be held on Wednesday, March 9, 1966. Mr. Grant read a letter received from Street & Company, Inc., managers of Felix. Realty Trust property at 1798 Massachusetts Avenue, requesting permission to install a mail box in the door at the above address. It was agreed that the chairman would write a letter to i4r. Street informing him that a hearing would not be necessary. Present at the meeting was Charles H. Cole, Architect, for 1775 Realty Trust. Mr. Grant read the original application dated October 19, 1965, and stated the changes made in the application since that date. Mr. Cole presented the commission with a sketch of the four elevations of the proposed one story building. Many questions were asked Mr. Cole, and it was agreed that he attend th me ti o eb 1966 scale drawings and samples of the brick and sni.ngles" tv iee�use i 3ie � o'toasiA lb/Aldine, *Fe b . z, 1966 Mr. Wal ter Pierce, a member of the Design Advisory Group of the Center stated Aft that he wanted to go on record that the Committee for Lexington Center has shown great interest in this building and they have had great cooperation with the owners and feel that it is an important part of the plans for the center. He further stated that from an asthetic point of view the building should be at least two stories, but that an economic factor must also be considered. Mr. George Kovolson introduced the group of citizs.is interested in the revitalization of the center of Lexington as follows: Messrs. Bryson, Brown, Trani, Tarb®x, Michelson, Cole, Sasaki, Fletcher, Pierce, and Olson, and Mrs. Sharfman. Mr. Hare, a consultant for Economic Development Associates, gave a description to the historic Districts Commission of the intention of this committee and their desire to work with the commission. Many questions were asked each group and a discussion followed. Mr. Grant stated that it would be helpful to have a member of this group attend the Historic Districts Commission hearings in order to be kept up to date on its decisions.
