HomeMy WebLinkAbout1966-01-05 January 5, 1966 The Historic Districts ~%ommission met at the time and place specified ~n the public notice of the hearing on the application of the Essington Junior Chamber of Commerce for a Certificate of .Appropriateness with respect to the placement of a plaque on the flagpole on the Battle Green, which is within the Battle Green District. Present were Donald R. Grant, Chairman Philip B. Parsons, Secretary, Ruth Bevan, Gsorg® E. Graven, Wil'cur ad. Jaquith and Associate Commissioner Ibex H. i Straw. No one was present in behalf of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously VCTID to Deny the application of the Lexington Junior Camber of Commerce due to the Lack of prosecution. Hearing was held at 8:15 P. M. on the application of Moore Homes Inc., for a Certificate of ApAropriateness with respect to the erection of a dwelling on Ipta B & 3as Eliot Road, which is within the Munroe Tavern District. Mr. Mark Moores Jr., appeared in behalf of the application and presented the commissian with elcale drawings of the proposed dwelling. These were viewed along with the plot plan, which was submitted with the application, Many questions were asked by the commission members. The chairman asked if any one present would like to comment on the application. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Cromwell and Mrs. Miller all agreed that they approved favorably of the color of the proposed house. The hearing was adjourned at 8:40 P.B. Upon motion daly made and seconded, it was unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate of Appropr~batenesa to Moore Homes Inc. with respect to the erection of a dwelling on Lots B and 3a on Eliot Road, which is within the Munroe Tavern District. Also present at the meeting was Mr. Charles H. Cole, Architect, for 1775 Realty Trust, who presented the commission with scale drawin~a of the elevations of the proposed building at 1777 - 1793 Massachusetts Avenue. He also showed the commission a rendering of the front elevation of the building. Many questions were asked Mr. Cole, and it was agreed that he meet with the commission again at its meeting on February 2, 19$$, at which t ima more definite information should be availab le on the height of the building. Mr. John Davies, an architect, of Le~o.ngton, stated that he wanted to be placed on record at this meeting, He felt that th3 most important matter is the mass and the scale of the building and that a two-story building is the minimum to be erected at this location and that it would be a g rave mistake for the commission to approve n one-story building as far as the design is concerned. Also present at the meeting were Messrs. Ernest Giroux, and George Matheson, in connection with Minute Zan nark Realty Trust. They presented Cdr. Robert Neiley of Bastille-Neiley, Architects, 120 Tremont Street, Boston, who showed the commission a rendering and a drawing of the front aryl. Mariam Street sides of the proposed building to be erected at 1639 Massachusetts Avenue. In view of the ~hairman's conflict of interest on this application, Wilbur M. Jaquith was ani-:ously elected Chairman Pro Tempore. Much discussion was had on this proposed building and many questions were asked. It was agreed that Mr. Neiley meet with the commission at 8:15 P.M. on January 12, 1966, at which time there would be more detailed plans available, Mr. Davies stated that he felt that this building solved the problem of height vary well. ' jn.h • 5, ~a66 r Present at the meeting were Dr. Charles Mooney, President of the Greek Orthodox Church of Lexington and Mr. Nicholas Prasinos, Attorney, who indicated that in accordance with a letter received from the commission the sign at the corner of Mariam Street and Massachusetts Avenue had been removed„ They indicated that they plan to apply for a certificate of appropriateness for the erection of a new sign. The hearing will beheld on February 2, 196b, at 8:00 P.M. 8iscussion was had on the application of "The Public Facilities and Information Center Committe®„ for a Certificate of Appropriateness for the erection and display of a sign on the BuciQnan Tavern ~'roperty and for additional lighting on the new historical Information Building, which is within the Battle Green District. Mr. Parsons stated that the above committee had approved the lighting fixture indicated in SYilliams Colonial Lighting Fixtures pamphlet, which had been submitted to the commission at the earlier ~deeting. Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate of Appropriateness to the Town of Lexington with respect to lighting fixtures to be installed on the Public Facilities and Information Building on the Buckman Tavern grounds, which is within the Battle Green District. The commission took no action on so much of the application dated November 12, 1965, as relates to the erection of a sign for the reason that the Public Facilities and Information ~®nter Commission has indicated to this commission that it is willing to forego the erection of an additional sign on the Buckman Tavern grounds in view of the desire of the selectmen to re-letter the existing sign on the southwest corner of the Tavern grounds so that that sign will serve to direct} visitors both to the Public Information Building and the Municipal Parking Area. :dr. Jaquith outlined his telephone conversation with Mr. John Silvaof Stop and Shop. Bdr. Silva had also written a letter to the commission and submitted plans of changes to be made in the original plans. A color chart showing the shade of blue for the cupola to be painted was submitted to the commission for its consideration. Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously VOTED that this shade of blue was appropriate. It was afireed that Mr. Jaquith contact Mr. Silva in this regard.
