The Historic Districts Commission met at the time and place specified
• in the public notice of the hearing on the application of Town of LexinFton, for
a Certificate of Appropriateness for the erection of a Public Facilities and
Information Building on the Buckman Tavern grounds, which is within the Battle
Green District.
Present were Donald R. Grant, Chairman, Philip B. rarsons, Secretary,
Ruth Bevan, George B. Graves and Wilbur M. Jaquith.
The chairman read the letter of application and the notice of hearing.
rresent in behalf of the application were C. Harry Erickson, Architect, Lester
York, Chairman of the Public Facilities Building Committee, Lincoln P. Cole, Chairman
of the Board of Selectmen and Selectman Robert Cataldo. Mr. Erickson showed the
commission a complete set of plans for the proposed building. Many questions were
asked by the commission members.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bittenbender appeared at the hearing and stated that
they wished to go on record as being opposed to the application. o one else wishing
to be heard, the hearing was adjourned at 8:50 P. M.
Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was VOPED to issue a certificate
of appropriateness to Town of Lexington with respect to the erection of a Public
Facilities and Information Building on the Buckman Tavern Grounds, mhich is within
the Battle Green District.
Further discussion was also had on the application of the Town of
Lexington for a certificate of appropriateness for the erection and display of a sign
on the Battle Green and a sign on the Old Belfry property on Clarke Street, which
is within the Battle Green District.
The chairman read the letter of application for those attending the meeting
that were not present at the original hearing. Mr. Lincoln P. Cole, chairman of
the board of Selectmen, representing the Town of Lexington, described the signs as
proposed by the Selectmen. Questions were asked Mr. Cole and the hearing was adjourned
at 9:00 M.
Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was VOTED to issue a certificate of
apropriateness to Town of Lexington with r espect to the erection and display of two
sins within the Battle Green District.
Also present at the meeting were Frank Crowley and John Silver representing
Stop and Shop, Inc. fir. Silver stated that they now plan to construct two additional
stores on their property on Worthen Road and Bedford Street. Mr. Bernard Healey and
Mr. David Buttrick showed the commission what they plan to build in this regard.
Questions were asked by the commission members. The chairman suggested that the
Trustees of Stop and Shop Inc., write a, letter of application to the commission to
amend the present certificate of appropriateness as well as a certificate for
additions, changes etc.
It was stated that the next meeting wLl be held May 5, 1965, on the
application of Lexington Trust Company. A hearing will also be held on May 19, 1965,
