Minutes of Meeting
of
Histories District Commission
on October 8. 1959
Commissioners Parsons Taylor, Worthen, Grant and Legro con-
vened in the Selectmen's Office at 8:30 P.M. On motion made and
duly seconded Mr. Grant was elected permanent chairman of the Com-
mission.
Discussion was had as to whether Mrs. Thomas had been compen-
sated in full for her services and disbursements as clerk of the
Commission prior to her decease. The chairman was instructed to
ascertain the amount, if any, due to Mrs. Thomas, to contact her
executor, Mr. Stevens and to arrange for the payment to him of
any amount which might appear to have been owing to Mrs. Thomas.
Mr. Taylor then withdrew from the meeting, and his place
and that of Mr. Legro were taken by associate members Cole and
Bryant, who had both participated in earlier phases of the two
principal matters under consideration. Mr. Legro sat as an ob-
server during the rest of the meeting.
There was some discussion as to the efforts of the chairman
to find a substitute for Mrs. Thomas to serve as clerk to the
Commission.
The chairman then read the notice of the hearing on the ap-
plication of Minute Man Cab Company for a certificate of appro-
priateness for the erection of a sign on the premises at 1833
Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle Green District.
The applicant was represented by Mr. Martin Durkin. Discussion
was had as to the size of the sign which had previously been
displayed to the members and associate members sitting at an
earlier meeting on September 10, 1959, and as to the proposed
lighting of such sign. On motion made and duly seconded, it was
unanimously voted to grant a certificate of appropriateness to
Minute Man Cab Company to erect the sign in question at the pro-
posed location. The principal lettering on the sign contains the
words "Minute Man Cab" and the applicant's telephone number.
The lettering consists of black Roman letters appearing on
a light cream (or buff) rectangular background, which in turn
is silhouetted by a white decorative shape, which in turn appears
on a red background with which the sign is framed.
The Commission then turned its attention t the pending appli-
cation of Minute Man Auto Supply Co. for a certificate of ap pro-
priateness for the erection of a sign on the premises at 1845
Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle Green District,

this matter still being before the Commission by virtue of the
411
applicant's having filed with the Commission a thirty -day ex-
tension in writing of the time within which the Commission could
keep the matter under consideration. The applicant was represen-
ted by Mr. Marl Comeau, the owner of the business in question,
and Mr. Batten, representing the company which proposed to pre-
pare the sign.
There then followed various questions and answers and dis-
cussion pertaining to the lettering on the sign to the size of
the letters, to the colors involved in the sign, and to the de-
sire of the applicant to shade the words "Minute Man" appearing
on the two copies of the sketch previously submitted to the Com-
mission. The applicant stated that he would be willing to omit
the requested shading and to have the lettering in the words
"Auto Supply" limited to a highth of sixteen inches with the
lines in the letters in the words limited to a width of two and
one -half inches.
On motion made and duly seconded, it was unanimously voted
to issue a certificate of appropriateness for the proposed sign.
This sign, which.is to be constructed of 2 -guage metal, is to
have a highth of twenty -four inches and a width of twenty -two
feet three inches, and with a border on all four sides not to
exceed one and one -half inches in width. The general scheme
and]ayout of the sign are to be as shown on the sketch submitted
by the applicant and prepared by Batten Bros. Inc. of Wakefield.
The sign is to have a white background and all lettering none
of which is to be shaded, is to be black. The aforementioned
border is to be light gray. The words "Minute Man" are to be in
script substantially as shown on said sketch. The words "Whole-
sale Distributers" and "Auto Supply" are to be block letters.
Letters in the words "Auto Supply" are to be sixteen inches in
highth, and none of the lines is to exceed two and one -half in-
ches in width.
Messrs. Comeau and Batten then withdrew leaving only those
sitting and Mr. Legro. Mr. Cole brought up the question of the
lack of paint on the copper gutters and downspouts, and Mr. Wor-
then brought up the question of the facsimile of the Minute Man
appearing on the front of the railroad station in Depot Square
which is now in the course of being renovated by Depositors Trust
Company pursuant to the certificate of appropriateness granted to
it last July. The secretary produced the Commission's copy of
the certificate, which was carefully reviewed. It was noted that,
with exceptions not here material, the certificate provided that
the building and trim are to be white. Mr. Cole remarked that
there is a paint with the trade name of Rustoleum which is guaran-
teed to stay on copper and aluminum.

With reference to the facsimile of the Minute Man, which is
• not referred to in the certificate of appropriateness and which
does not appear on any of the sketches or plans submitted to the
Commission at the time of the hearing on the application of De-
positors Trust Company Mr. Worthen stated that he had already
advised Mr. Douglass the contractor, that either he or Mr. Cat -
aldo should consult Douglass, Commission concerning the erection of
the same but that Mr. Douglass had said that he did not think
that either one of them would bother to follow Mr. Worthen's sug-
gestion. The chairman was thereupon instructed to write a let-
ter to Mr. Cataldo advising him to remedy these deviations from
the eertficate granted to Depositors Trust Company.
Some discussion was had as to the two Western Union signs
appearing on the premises at 1833 Massachusetts Avenue. Out-
standing bills in connection with the notices of_the hearing on
the application of Minute Man Cab Company were approved for pay..
ment, and the meeting adjourned at 9:45 PM.
