Sitting on the Commission were Donald R. Grant, Chairman pro tempore Philip B. Parsons, Edwin B. Worthen, Jr., and Associate Members Charles H. Cole and Carl E. Bryant. Mr. Durkin and another gentleman from the company were present. On November 25, 1958 (issued November 27) this company was granted a certificate of appropriateness to install a new en.• trance doorway, lighting and a carefully- described sign. Orig- inally they thought they would have to take out a window and put the sign in question where the window had been on the side of the building. However, they found they did not have to take out the window and now wish to erect the sign over the door. They there- fore made the letters different in type, now Roman, larger than the letters originally planned, and left off the facsimile of the Minute Man. The main part of the sign is the same, ie., cream background black letters, but is now silhoutted on white and the edges of the sign are red. The Commission explained they had to decide if this was enough like the sign for which permission had been given, so they could approve it, or whether a new hearing would have to be advertised. • • • Sept. 10, 1159 . The Commission felt this sign a definite radical change but much better. A discussion was held as to whether the red border could be cut off (sign is of marine plywood), but they felt if this were done difficulties would be encountered in hanging the sign. The red edge background would just about match the fake brick on the building front. It was finally decided by a xnajority of the Commission that the sign presented to it at this meeting was sufficiently different from the sketch submitted to the Com- mission and from the certificate of appropriateness granted on November 27, 1958 that the Commission would have to hold another public hearing if an application for the same were filed by the applicant. Mr. Grant returned the sign and told Mr. Durkin the above and also said that if a letter could be in to the Commission by Monday, September 14, a notice could be published Thursday, Sep- tember 17 and a hearing held on or after Thursday, October 1. Mr. Durkin agreed to do this. Philip B. Parsons, Secretary -2-
