The Historic Districts Commission held a public hearing Wednesday,
• March 11, 1959 in the Selectmen's Room, Town Office Building at
7 :30 p.M, on the application of Helge A.Anderson for a certificate
for the erection of a sign on the building at 6 -8 Muzzey St. which
is within the Battle Green District. Sitting on the Commission
were Dexter A.nith, Chairman, Philip B.Parsona, Edwin B.Worthen,Jr.
and Associate Members Mra.Robert C.Merriam and Charles H.Cole.
Present were Mr.Anderson and Messes Lillian and Agnes Viano.
Mr. Smith read the notice. Mr. Anderson showed the plan and said
they did not want a large sign on the front of the building but
wanted this directory sign on the side of the building facing
Mass. Ave. This will be a white background with black letters and
of 5/8" thick Duraply. The sign would be very close to front of
building at placed so it would be at about the top of a car level.
Each tenant would have one slot but as there is plenty of room
now, Mr.Anderson would have his name on the sign as well as the
words "Real Estate °.
MBETING: After a short discussion, the following vote was taken:
VOTE: It was unamimously voted to issue a certificate of appropriateness
to Helge A.Anderson for the erection of a sign and the Chairman was
directed to sign the Certificate of Appropriateness as prepared.
CERTIFICATE FORMS: A discussion was held regarding the revising
of the wording on the Certificate Forms, as it will be necessary to
have some printed shortly. This will be decided at the next hearing.
ADORN SALON: It was noted that they had not contacted Mr.Parsons
*regarding the approval of this sign. Mrs.Thomas stated she had
sent a ci)py of this certificate to the Town Building Dept., after
having had a call that afternoon saying they could not find their
copy and a gentleman had been in from the Adorn regarding this.

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE READING ROOM: It was noted that after considerable
study and investigation, these people had been informed that if they
wished to put up an awning with no lettering do it, they could
Signs
do so but if any lettering is on it, it comes under the Town /By-
Laws and it would then b e necessary for them to go before the Board
of Appeals first and then to come before the Commission. Nothing
further has been heard on this.
NOTICES: Mr.Smith raised the question that while we have been
sending notices to every owner in each District on hearings, the
Act, leaves this up to the Commission. Mrs. Thomas was asked to
contact Mr. Stevens on this. NOTE: This has been done and Mr.Stevens
said he felt definitely the Commission could follow the wording of
the Act, "..mail a copy..to applicant, to owners of all property
deemed by the Commission to be affected thereby, to planning board..
etc." He said naturally on a hearing of major importance, presumably
notices would be sent to entire District. Mr.Stevens further
suggested that a letter be sent to the }Board of Assessors asking
that they inform the Secretary of the Commission of any changes
in ownership of property in any District. If they would do this,
it would keep the lists up to date and save much time on the part
of the Commission in having to check the entire list.
Inasmuch as this will be Mrs.Merriamts last meeting, she turned
over her books containing reports of bearings, maps, etc. to
the Chairman. These are being kept by the Clerk to be turned
over to her successor.
Meeting adjourned at 8 :40 P.M.
