I: regular meeting of the Planning Board was held
on Tuondav, May 27, 1957 at 7:35 p.m. in the Town En-
gineer's Room, `Posan Office Buildixig. Present were
':emhers Abbott, Burnell, Grindle, Jaquith and Soule
and_ Planning Director Snow. T'ir. Stevens was present
from 9:15 n.m. until 9:50 o.m.
Approved were the minutes of i'ebruary 25, May
16 and 20, 1957 meetings.
Approved also was a bill from T�Iinute-man Pub-
lications, Iric., a.dvertisinF, for regional shopping
zoning and Battle View Park, Section 2 public hear-
ings --08$2.0$.

r57-50, submitted by Hark I,Toore, Jr., plan
same as submitted t14ith application ;i56=91.
This plan was endorsed on November 1, 1956 but had
riot been recorded. The Registry of Deeds did not
accept the elan for recording because the date of
approval was more than six months to the time said
plan Kas to be recorded. It was decided to change
the date of endorsement :r:nrl to substitute a current
Planning Board members name for that of Mr. Hathaway
who is no longer a member oi the Board.
It was moved, seconded and unanimously

At this time the Board considered Mr. Hodg-
don's Piay 25, 19,57 letter requesting a "hearing" on
this application I'57-49, theBoardhaving determined
th:-t the plan acccmpanying said application had re-
quired Planning Board approval. It eras decided that
the chairman would .-trite a letter to Mr. Hodgdon
stating t'iat the Planning Board's program was
especially full at present with projects concerning

the proposed zoning for a proposed regional shopping

the requested interview until after the special town

meeting on June 24. It was also requested that in
the meantime Air. Hodgdon furnish evidence why he con- ,
si_dered the plan submitted as not requiring Planning
Board approval under the subdivision control lair.
McCORIMACK The Board took under consideration the appli-
AAD BRUN cation of Paul J. McCormack and Albert C. Brun for
tentative approval of a preliminary plan of land be-
tween Maple and 1:1oburn streets and located adjacent
to the Harrington School. Pir. Snow reported on his
examination with Recreational Director Samborski of
said land which had been previously discussed as a
possible site for a playground. He stated that the
Recreation Committee wished the Planning Board to
obtain an option for the purchase of lour or five acres
of said i'icCorm.-ack-Brun land adjacent to the Harrington
School, the exact size to be determined by r. Snow
after a detailed study indicating the best development
for recreational purposes.
Concerning the preliminary plan there was dis-
cussed also the relocation of the street abutting the
school site, said relocation to be recommended whether
or not the proposed recreation site was to be acquired.
Thereupon it was moved by -ir. Jaquith, seconded by Kr.
Soule and unanimously '
VOTED: that the preliminary subdivision plan
entitled "Plan Showing Proposed Lotting
Land in Lexington -Kass.", dated Jan. 15,
.1957, together with the application for
tentative approval of preliminary plan
dated Apr. 26, 1957 and submitted on
April 29, 1957 be and hereby is approved
subject to the conditions that an area
for acquisition by the Tom for recreation
purposes be set aside in the southeasterly
side of the Property, that the street lay-
out be adjusted to provide for said re-
creation area and to conform to the Plan-
ning Board's study plan for the neighbor-
hood.

APPEALS to the Joseph Ponsignore petition ane. its relation
future subdivision of the i,ionsignore land, showing
to the Board previous studies made in April 1956 for
'Mr. Frissore in conjunction with the Battle View
Park Realty Trust plans. It vas decided to take no
action in regard to the 1onoignore petition but to
point out for the benefit of both the Board of ,
Appeals and Mr. T,ionsignore the nossi bilities for the
future development of the I onsignore lane', particu-
larly in regard to fir. Monsitrnore's proposal.
P�,r. Stevens came to the meeting at 9:15 p.m. at
' which time the Board considered the release of re-
strictions in regard to its previous conditional
approval ol` the Section 16 Sun Valley definitive
subdivision plan. Conveyance of utilities and ease-
ments having been granted the to`,:m and the work hav-
ing; been done to t'he satisfaction of the Superinten-
dent. of Public '.t:'orks, it was moved by i,ir. Burnell,
seconded by -;r. Abbott, and unanimously
VOTED: to execute a Certificate of Performance
that the ways and other improvements re-
quired under the Rules and regulations of
the Planning, Board and referred to in the
conditional approval contract executed by
DeVries Construction Co., Inc., dated
October 30, 1956 have been constructed
and installed in the manner specified in
and in accordance with the terms of the
application referred to therein, and all
the lots shop-.rn on the plan entitled 'Sec-
tion Sixteen of Sun Valley Lexington,
T1ass. Ovned by DeVries Construction Co.,
Inc." are hereby released.
..thereupon the Planning^ Board signed a Certificate of
Performance dated P -lav 27, 1957 and to be recorded in
the Middlesex South District Registry of Deeds by P•Ir.
Stevens.

The Planning Board then reviewed the situation HAWTHORNE

the sales and purchase agreement for the Junior High
School site as it related to the approval of the
definitive plan for ;:ne -roposed Hawthorne Acres sub-
division.
It was understood that for -purposes of convey-
ance to the Torn the To?vn Engineer was to prepare a
plan sho,ing the rroposed Junior High School site and
a right of way to Adams Street, said right of way being
drawn to coincide with plans for a proposed 50 -foot
road to be sho,":n in the dei'_nitive plans for the Haw-
thorne Acres subdivision.
Mr. Snow reported his findings in regard to SUBDIVISION

cessin definitive subdivision plans and it was
decided th,=:t in the nar future the Board would dis-
cuss this matter further and in more detail ti.aith I',r.
Stevens.
I.r. Stevens left the meeting at 9:50 p.m. at LORIIG HILL
w-iich time Iessrs. Grindle and Jaquith met With the ESTATES
Selectmen to 'iscuss the proposed means of access
from ;^°,altham Street over town land to th e Loring Hill '
Estates subdivision.
These men returned to the meeting at 10:15 p.m.
together with Supt. of Public Works Gayer to discuss
the matter further with the Board and to review the
propose.plan for a road connecting Waltham street
with said subdivision. The Board expressed its
approval of said plan and Ir. Gayer left the meeting
at 10:30 p.m•
REGIO!,AL The Board then discussed matters in connection
SIIOPPIP•iG with Filene's proposal for a regional shopping center
CEK,TER in Lexington and the problems of presentation of
PRCPOSAL material and information at the proposed public hear-
ing in regard to said proposal.. It was decided to
meet with Idr. Gummere at 7:30 p.m. on !=ay 31, 1957 to
discuss procedures in regard to the method of conducting
the hearing.
The meeting adjourned at 10:10 p.m.
