HomeMy WebLinkAbout1947-08-11 PLANNING BOARD METING III August 11, 1947 Presents Northen, Richards and Ferguson School Sites The Board met jointly with the Board of Selectmen and School Committee to discuss further the problem of school sites. Consideration finally con- centrated on the two sites, one between Colony Road and Grant Street (with its area increased approximately 1.5 acres by relocation of Colony Road) and a level area extending from Colony Road and Adams Street. No particular pre- ference was expressed for either site; the ultimate choice resting with other factors. The Planning Board is to prepare a more complete topographic layout of these two sites at scale 1" equals 100', showing existing property lines, proposed means of access, and any other data necessary for the Town Counsel in order that two articles for the warrant may be drawn up by August 18. M'.Richards to contact Miller and Nylander immediately for this work to be investigated and completed. The meeting adjourned at 10:30 p.m. IRespec lg. submitted, E.B.Worthen, Jr. / Clerk, pro-tem Subsequent to this meeting, the following have been transacted: C.H.Lothron Letter from P1r.Lothrop of Bloomfield Street dated July 31 has been answered by Chairman. Idr.Lothrop, whose greenhouse and land is between lands of Black and Kelley (formerly Ryder) requested information as to the future development of his land how that Slocum Road will not be extended all the way through to Sherburne Road. See letters on file. School Sites The Chairman met with the Selectmen with the completed plan on August 16, and again at their meeting on August 18. Three possible sites, as indicated, were considered. III Site 1. Colony Road and Grant Street. Lands of Bowser and Baskin, total of 6.5 acres. Opinion was that winding and steep Colony Road something of a hazard I to children when developed (bicycles, etc.), that Bowser land taking might result in high damages, and proximity of adjacent houses and lots a factor. Site Adams Street to Colony Road. Land of Porter Bros. and Wilson. Approx. 11 acres. 450' frontage on Adams Street, and average depth of 1100'. Bounded on the north by 25' sewer easement; on the east by land of Burton (on Colony Road); on the 'south by Porter Bros. & Wilson and the Bird Sanctuary (W.H.Ballerd, Trustee). Land slopes upward from this line. Site 3 On easterly side of dant Street, opposite the foot of York Street. Land of McKearney, comprising 3 acres, and running back to the Vine Brook easement. Two houses and lots not in- cluded. Opinionthatsite is far too small, and that the openbrook channel would constitute a hazard unless fenced off. In order to obi tai more land it would be necessary to pipe this portion of Om brook underground, or expand to the north on land of Buse, used as truck farm and containing greenhouses and other buildings. Site 2 was considered to offer the fewest disadvantages, and the following means of approach were worked out and shown accordingly on the plan. a. From Colony Road, land of Burton, comprising about 1/2 acre. , b. Prom Woodland Road, the taking of one vacant house lot, and then extending a right of way approximately 80' wide, and adjacent to the property line of the Biard Sanctuary, through land of Porter Bros. & Wilson. About 1 acre. Over this would be developed a foot path or secondary road, for approach. The Board of Selectmen appeared favorably disposed toward site 2, and they will have owners of this land come in at their next meeting, as yell as the owners of Site 1, in order to discuss the problem more fully with them.
