September 30, 1943
A meeting of the Planning Board was held at the Town Office
' Building on September 30, 1943 with Messrs. Greeley, Ferguson,
Worthen and Cromwell.
The Planning Board met with the Fire Engineers to continue the
discussion of fire stations.
The Fire Engineers read letters from Mr. Cann, the Building
Inspector, condemning the two present stations.
The Fire Engineers informed the Planning Board that since the
last meeting they had considered the question of locating stations
at great length and had concluded as follows:
The town should have three statiohs:
Central Station -- For six vehicles; located on Bedford Street
probably at Revere.
East Lexington Station -- Two door, two deep; located as at present
TweRE"Le3ilng,ton Station -- Two door, one deep; located at Grassland
or in that locality. (After some discussion it was concluded
that the best location would be to the east of the intersection
of Spring Street and Marrett.)
The Fire Engineers emphasized that it would not be desirable,
' if only two stations are to be built, to locate the Central and
East Lexington Stations as above. This would not leave West
Lexington well protected.
Regarding the changes between present and previous recommendations
for location the Fire Engineers pointed out:
1. It would be very expensive to build on the Barnes Property
since a station there should be in keeping as to style and,
general appearance with nearby public buildings
2. The location on Bedford Street would be better for North
Lexngton.
3. Moving the Central Station to Bedford Street would not mean
that it would take a longer time to send equipment to points
east as compared to the present locations. At present the exit
from Merriam Street to Massaclatsetts Avenue is blind and traffic
conditions always require a stop before entering Massachusetts
* Avenues
40 The. -East Lexington Station should not be moved further east
if the Central Station is located as now recommended.
S. If the Central Station is moved to the Barnes property this
' might necessitAte more stations ultiwate*7 than now planned for
with additional expense of operation and maintenance.
No date was set for the next meeting.
