July 7, 1943
To the Planning Board
Lexington, Massachusetts
Gentlemen:
Postwar
Planning
Middlesex
Turnpike
"I submit a report of my activities during the month
of June 1943. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts proposes
to relocate the Middlesex Turnpike (the present location
is at Lowell Street) and join it with the new extant
Cambridge -Concord Turnpike. The union of these highways
could occur most practically only in the Town of Lexington.
Lest this road be hurriedly situated by officials motivated
only by limited principles of engineering -economics and
not mindful of the best interests of the Town, preliminary
studies and suggestions must be presented by those
concerned with the welfare of Lexington at that time when
construction may again be undertaken.
Meeting July 7, 1943 page 2.
' In conjunction with this there should be a concern
for civic developments adjoining this right of way.
The State Planning Board gives evidence of being most
receptive to sound recommendations.
"Inview of this the following have been prepared
and filed in the Town Engineer's Office.
a. A profile of the drain which follows and crosses the Boston
and Maine Railroad right of way along the stretch where
the road may meet it.
b. My sketch of the State Planning Board's proposed
location of the highway from Lexington to the New
Hampshire border.
C. A profile of most of the Lexington section of the
proposed route, indicating cut and fill.
d. A plan and elevation of grade eliminations where
the said route crosses the Boston & Maine Railroad
and Massachusetts Avenue.
e. A topographic map (scale 1" equals 1001) of the
' Great Meadows Area indicating a more detailed place-
ment of the highway, a lake formed by flooding of
the bog and the landscaping and construction of
recreational facilities adjacent to it.
f. A topographic map (scale 1" equals 2001) of the same
region but covering a larger area and indicating
preliminary subdivisions.
g. A topographic map (scale 1" equals 2001) of most of the
area in Lexington near both the state's and the Town
Planning Board's choices for the road's position.
h. At Scotch tape indication of the road on a prepared
topographic plan (scale 1" equals 8001) of Lexington.
i. A Scotch tape indication of the road on prepared
aerial photograph (scale 1" equals 8001) of Lexington.
Small Drawings
"These are of a preliminary and flexible character,
needing much further expension in which I trust I may
be of some utility.
"They were based on material found in the files of
the Town Planning Board, the Town Lngineer (note
Meeting July 70 1943 page 3.
' suggestions on plans 747, 908, and 1, 123), the State Planning
Board and the libraries of Harvard University and the
M.I.T. (caution must be used in accepting the accuracy of
some of this material). When the war censorship is relaxed
it would be advisable to obtain a set of the Land Study
Maps of Lexington, distributed through the State Planning
Board, and other relevant data.
"I am most grateful for the willing assistance granted
me by the personnel of the Town Lngineer, the Assessor
and other departments, and especially of you, the Planning
Board."
Respectfully,
Martin D. Meyerson (signed)
Planning Consultant "
No date was set for the next meeting.
