HomeMy WebLinkAbout1936-07-14PLANNING BOARD MEETING July 14, 1936 1 Present:- Messrs. Borden, Ellis, Ferguson, Nicherson & Kimball. Individual reports were made by the members giving de- tailed opinions on the treatment to be given and the procedure to be followed in an effort to advance the control of the side - developments along the Concord Turnpike. It was the general opinion that the studies had reached a point where the Board was obliged to make definite recommenda- tions to the Town at an early Town Meeting. The members are practically unanimous in the feeling that general business along this way is not only undesirable but a menace to the purpose for which the way was intended and would result in decreased property values to the abutting real estate owners. At the same time, it is generally felt that provisions must be made to accommodate the through travelling motorist in obtaining gasoline and oil It is agreed that the Town is suitably supplied with stations for the local driver and that the problem turns around the station frequency necessary to meet requirements without imparing the safety of travel, the movement of traffic and the scenic attributes of the neighborhood, ' It was decided, subject to the approval of the Town Counsel, that an amendment to the Zoning By -Law providing for a new district restricted to the sale of gasoline and oil products should be prepared and submitted to the Town and that two such districts should prove all that is necessary for the Concord Turnpike. A brief discussion of the relative merits of locations at intervals between intersections or directly at locations showed an equal division in favor for Watertown Street and north easterly corner at Pleasant Street for west bound traffic and at the -junction of Concord Avenue and the south west corner at Spring Street for east bound traffic. It was finally agreed that the Board would not take the initiative in securing a location but if and when need was shown to exist, the Board would favor the Pleasant Street and Spring Street locations. The advisability of an informational program was con- sidered and Mr. Borden will draft the material to be used while Dir. Kimball Will prepare in conjunction with the Town Counsel, a draft of a proposed amendment to provide the new district. The meeting adjourned at 10:20 P. M. ' Respectfully submitted, Clerk Concord Turnpike
