February 20, 1933
A meeting of the Planning Board was held in the Conference
Room of the Town Office Building Monday, February 20, 1933. Messrs.
Duffy, Scheibe, Milne and Glynn were present. The secretary was
also present.
Mr. Duffy presented resolutions, which he drafted, on the ns Resolutio
death of Pair. Emery. They were discussed and corrected but not _
signed as Pur. Glynn injured his arm and was unable to write.
Mr. Greeley came before the Board in regard to the proposed
multiple dwelling, which, he informed the Board, is to be fireproof
as it would rent better and there would be less depreciation:. He
further stated that they had no money, nothing but the land options
and plans. They are anxious to see the thing progess because it
will give employment to many and keep the young married people in
town where they can get a reasonable rent. The reasonsfor select-
ing this area is because it is zoned for a residence and will never
be used for such; it is being used for business and under the
present zoning nothing can be built there becauae there is no front-
age.
Nir. Duffy stated that when young married people get established
they usually come to a town like Lexington where they can buy a
single family house and there is a marked sentiment of the people
in Lexington to keep it on the same basis.
, Mr. Greeley said he was looking forward to seeing this sort
of building in the midst of a residencigl district, and that they
were not planning it as a speculation problem.
The Planning Board has been working through hr. Hartman, Proposed.
consultant on zoning, to get articles which would permit putting Multiple
the problem before the Town. Dwelling
Mr. Milne asked if Dr. Greeley would be agrieved, if through
lack of time, the Board was uhable to get the matter before the
Town, and P:ir. Greeley replied that he would not, that it might be
the worst possible start if something got out that would kill the
whole thing. He said he thought they could get the land options
renewed if it did not go through now.
Por. Luffy informed. Dir. Greeley that there was less than a
week to get the notices written up and sent to the property owners
and this was a short time to handle such an important matter. He
thought it would be better to wait until a later meeting.
To this statement Lr. Greeley replied that he did not want
the Board to hurry as they should feel sure in their judgment. If
the building could be started May 15, it woulcf be ready for occupancy
in Septecber.
11r. Scheibe questioned Ir. Greeley regarding the meaning
of housekeeping equipment and was informed that it was a sink and
a stove. If people occupied a whole floor and did not have a sink
or a stove, they were not housekeeping in the legal sense.
The rent of one of these apartments would be from $50.00
to $75.00 a month which includes heat, refrigeration and water.'
This is equivalent to X42.00 on a single family house where they
would have to pay taxes, heat, regrigeration and water.
The amendments prepared by Mr. Hartman were discussed.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:15 P. Pa.
