April 5, 1932
A meeting of the Planning* Board was held in the Confer-
ence Room of the Town Office Building, Tuesday, April 5, 1932,
at 8:00 P. 11. Messrs. Scheibe, Milne, Glynn, Cutler and Duffy
were present. The Town Engineer and'secretary were also present.
&r. Duffy was elected Chairman for the evening.
Mr. Scheibe informed the Board that he had called the
meeting to discuss the subject of town forests. he has talked
with Mr. Trask who said that if the Planning Board recommended
a town forest, he would see that the Selectmen would take care
of the details and pass it on so that the plotting may be done
in time for planting this year. The State is willing to supply
TOWN
20,000 trees if we set aside a section and call it a town forest. FOREST
The trees are four *ears old, have already been transplanted
two or three times, and could be set out by the unemploved
men of the town. 'l'he State supplies 1,000 trees to an acre
/ and two men can plant that number in a day.
The land at the rear of the Franklin & Parker Schools,
Tower Park, around the old reservoir, at the rear of Westview
Cemetery, bowman Park, Center Playground, Town Farm and the
land in back of the Lincoln Street dump were all suggested
as being suitable ground to start this project. The trees
at Bowman Park are thinning out and this is good ground for
pine. The Westview Cemetery tract consists of about forty
acres and they have only worked on about one-half of it.
There are about seven acres around the reservoir.

Mr. Luffy stated that he thought some definite plan should
be outlined which takes into consideration the proper arrange-
ment for future ground and the variety of space. Messrs. Edward
Ballard, jtephen Hamblin and Edward Wood were suggested as be-
ing able to do this work.
It was thought that it might be wise to plant the trees
In one place and then when desired, they could be transplanted.
It was decided that this method would be too expensive..
Mr. Scheibe stated that he thought the land in back of
the Lincoln Street dump should be reserved for a town nursery
so that when a tree is cut down., it may be replaced by a new
one. Fiore people would buy them for their property if they
could get them more reasonablI. Mr. Milne made the suggestion
that if trees were planted along street with the abutters pay -
Ing one-half as they do for sidewalks, it would be less ex-
pensive.than maintaining a nursery.
Mr. t'Alne made the following motion:- "The Planning Board
• recommends to the Selectmen, that subject to the approval of
kessrs. Stephen Hamblin, Edward Ballard and Edward Wood, an
area. about the old reservoir, and Bowman Park be set aside
as town forests and planted with Red Pine secured from the
State, and that a planting of Spruce be made in the back
area of the Westview Cemetery tract with a view of trans-
planting a part of these at some future date if it is found
desirable."
Mr. Glynn seconded the motion and it was unanimously voted.
The secretary was instructed to write the Selectmen to this effect.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:38 P. k.
Respectfully subm tted,
Clerk
