HomeMy WebLinkAbout1987-05-12 540 Recreation Camps J W Hayden Recreation Center Lexington Christian Academy 24 Lincoln Street Meadow Breeze Day Camp 48 Bartlett Avenue Funeral Directors John B Douglass Arthur F Douglass Jeffrey W Blodgett BOARD OF HEALTH MEETING MAY 12, 1987 The monthly meeting of the Board of Health was held on Tuesday, May 12, 1987 at 7 30 p m in Room G-15 of the Town Office Building Members presents were Dr Linda Roemer, Dr Stanley Finkelstein and Mr George Smith, Jr , Director of Public Health Dr Goldmann was unable to attend Introduction Mr Smith introduced Dr Linda Roemer as the new Board member Dr Roemer, a previous Board member, had previously served the town for a three-year term and could not take a second term dur to commitments that made her relocate to Nairobi, Kenya Board of Some mention was made of the Agenda item on reorganization and the Health election of a Chairman Dr Finkelstein felt that more time was needed Reorganization to consider this item He felt that it was too important to take action on short notice It was recommended that this be deferred to the next Board meeting when, hopefully, all members would be present and more thought could be given to the process Mr Smith indicated he still had not been in contact with Dr Delulio relative to the Board letter of March 18, 1987 Mosquito Mr Smith reviewed the aerial Mosquito Larviciding Program which was Larviciding completed on April 21, 1987 Mr Smith indicated that we apparently received good larve control with this application He also said he was expecting a written report from the East Middlesex Mosquito Control Project onthis project Dr Roemer inquired into the educational effort and Mr Smith said that information from the State did not indicate any problems, but we have our material ready to go Dr Roemer suggested that we think about sending information home with elementary school children Mr Smith also indicated that our mosquito control efforts had been enhanced by the addition of the Town of Lincoln and Hanscom Field to the EMMCP These additions, in particular Hanscom, has saved Lexing- ton in the range of $2,000 00 541 MAY 12, 1987 continued The Rabies Clinic has been scheduled for June 4th and 5th Dr Howard Rabies Smith will be staffing this year's clinic The Town Clerk will be sell- Clinic ing dog licenses this year as an added convenience Mr Smith indicated that we should expand our clinic to include cats for 1988 The Health Department co-sponsored choke saving classes along with Blue Choke Saver Cross/Blue Shield and Minuteman Vocational Tech to help food handlers meet their obligations in Choke Saver Training Some 130 people were trained and certified on April 28 and May 5, 1987 Asbestos related concerns are becoming a prominent issue in our daily Asbestos operations People are becoming more aware of asbestos and most are Removal seeking permanent relief from the problem by opting for removal This has added significantly to our workload We are now entering the pool inspection season Pool inspections are Pools also adding greatly to our workload Mr Smith indicated that the Institutional Biosafety Committee for Genetic Genetics Institute held its first meeting on May 11, 1987 The Institute committee reviewed the projects that were previously discussed with IBM Meeting the 7bwn Biosafety Committee and Board Both projects were approved May 11, 1987 A tour of the Lexington facility was also conducted Mr Smith reported that the State Board of Plumbing Examiners and Plumbing Gas Fitters had approved the variance requested by TAMS at the Code previous meeting relative to the number of toilets at Estabrook Variance School Mr Smith reported that we currently receive a number of anxiety calls Radon on the subject of Radon We respond to these by providing residents with routinely updated information along with a list of laboratories that provide Radon testing (air and water) There are presently no state programs to test water or air for Radon levels A few people in town have shown the results of private tests with us and to this point no levels have exceeded the 4 picocurie/liter minimum screening measurement This, of course, does not mean Lexington does not have a Radon problem of any significance, only that no levels of consequence have been brought to our attention The Board members made a decision to set meetings for the second Tuesday of each month The next meeting will be held on June 9 The meeting adjourned at 8 15 p m The following permits were signed by the Board Animal Permits Adela M.
