Introduction
BOARD OF HEALTH MEETING
MAY 12, 1987
The monthly meeting of the Board of Health was held on Tuesday, May 12,
1987 at 7:30 p.m. in Room G-15 of the Town Office Building. Members
presents were: Dr. Linda Roemer, Dr. Stanley Finkelstein and Mr. George
Smith, Jr., Director of Public Health. Dr. Goldmann was unable to attend.
Mr. Smith introduced Dr. Linda Roemer as the new Board member. Dr.
Roemer, a previous Board member, had previously served the town for a
three-year term and could not take a second term dur to commitments
that made her relocate to Nairobi, Kenya.
Board of Some mention was made of the Agenda item on reorganization and the
Health election of a Chairman. Dr. Finkelstein felt that more time was needed
Reorganization to consider this item. He felt that it was too important to take action
on short notice.
It was recommended that this be deferred to the next Board meeting when,
hopefully, all members would be present and more thought could be given
to the process.
Mr. Smith indicated he still had not been in contact with Dr. DeIulio
relative to the Board letter of March 18, 1987.
Mosquito Mr. Smith reviewed the aerial Mosquito Larviciding Program which was
Larviciding completed on April 21, 1987. Mr. Smith indicated that we apparently
received good larve control with this application. He also said he
was expecting a written report from the East Middlesex Mosquito
Control Project onthis project.
Dr. Roemer inquired into theeducational effort and Mr. Smith said that
information from the State did not indicate any problems, but we have
our material ready to go.
Dr. Roemer suggested that we think about sending information home with
elementary school children.
Mr. Smith also indicated that our mosquito control efforts had been
enhanced by the addition of the Town of Lincoln and Hanscom Field to
the EMMCP. These additions, in particular Hanscom, has saved Lexing-
ton in the range of $2,000.00.

The Health Department co-sponsored choke saving classes along with Blue Choke Saver
Cross/Blue Shield and Minuteman Vocational Tech to help food handlers meet
their obligations in Choke Saver Training. Some 130 people were trained
and certified on April 28 and May 5, 1987.
Asbestos related concerns are becoming a prominent issue in our daily
operations. People are becoming more aware of asbestos and most are
seeking permanent relief from the problem by opting for removal. This
has added significantly to our workload.

We are now entering the pool inspection season. Pool inspections are Pools
also adding greatly to our workload.
Mr. Smith indicated that the Institutional Biosafety Committee for
Genetics Institute held its first meeting on May 11, 1987. The
committee reviewed the projects that were previously discussed with
the 7bwn Biosafety Committee and Board. Both projects were approved.
A tour of the Lexington facility was also conducted.
Mr. Smith reported that the State Board of Plumbing Examiners and
Gas Fitters had approved the variance requested by TAMS at the
previous meeting relative to the number of toilets at Estabrook
School.

Mr. Smith reported that we currently receive a number of anxiety calls Radon
on the subject of Radon. We respond to these by providing residents
with routinely updated information along with a list of laboratories
that provide Radon testing (air and water). There are presently no state
programs to test water or air for Radon levels. A few people in town have
shown the results of private tests with us and to this point no levels
have exceeded the 4 picocurie/liter minimum screening measurement. This,
of course, does not mean Lexington does not have a Radon problem of any
significance, only that no levels of consequence have been brought to
our attention.
The Board members made a decision to set meetings for the second Tuesday
of each month. The next meeting will be held on June 9.
The meeting adjourned at 8:15 p.m.
