BOARD OF HEALTH SPECIAL MEETING
June 24, 1958
A special meeting was called by Mr. Lurvey, the Health Officer,
on Tuesday, June 24, 1958, at 5 P.M. in the Health Office. Present
Potter's were Mr. William Potter, Mr. Richard Woodies, and Mr. Herterick. It
Piggery had been agreed to hold this meeting at the special meeting on May 1
before the 1958 renewal of the license to keep swine at Potters was
issued.
Mr. Potter reported that arrangements are now completed for the
hauling out of manure on a regular schedule, two or three times a
week, whenever a truckload is ready. It will be taken to Burlington.
There will be no more manure piles. What is left now will be taken
away:;'.Tha truck will start hauling as soon as the proper covering
is installed, probably the first of next week.
Mr. Lurvey said he would now recommend to the Board of Health
that the license to keep swine be issued to the Potters.
Mr. Herterick made the statement that he is perfectly satisfied
with the cooperation of Mr. Potter and the Board of Health, and that
everything is being done that can be done.
Mr. Herterick spoke of seeing rats again. Mr. Potter said he
is not sure they are coming from the piggery or the 1775 house res-
taurant. Could be they are young muskrats which look very similar
to rats, and would be from the brook near Route 2. With the baiting
being done regularly at the piggery Mr. Potter said he rarely sees
any rats at the farm.
Mr. Herterick asked what kind of fencing is on the northeast
side of the property. He has had complaints that children are still
getting into the farm and are bringing home stale food, etc.
Mr. Potter explained there is a stone wall on the north side, and
it is mostly open on the Walnut Street side because of the trucks
coming and going. Children probably get in thru the woods.
Mr. Herterick suggested maybe the whole farm should be fenced in,
chain link fence or something similar. Mr. Potter said that it
would be impossible, and the children could still climb in.
Mr. Lurvey said fencing would not come under the Health Department.
Mr. Woodies remarked that this arrangement to haul out the manure
on a regular schedule seems like a step in the right direction.
Mr. Woodis and Mr. Herterick would still like to have an informal
meeting, perhaps the first week in September, to discuss the situation
again after a summer under the new arrangement.
