The Health Department moved into its new quarters on the second floor rear of the new Town Office Building on Thursday, December 5, but the meeting was held in the Select- men's Room as usual because the new Conference Room is not as yet properly furnished. Regular bills for the period were approved. It was agreed to order some furniture for the new office. Estimates on an execu- tive desk and swivel chair, two straight chaits and a table for the use of customers, a new typewriter and typewriter table, were approved by the Board. Itis hoped that delivery will be made within two weeks. These items are to be paid for under the 1957 appropriations. At 3.30 P.M. Mr. Harry Erickson, Lexington architect, met with the Board to discuss his plans for remodelling the Junior High School kitchen. In order to enlarge the kitchen, plans call for more excavationunder the front stone stens. In the past the kitchen has been small, damp, and poorly ventilated, and Miss Wkight, the dietician in charge of school lunchrooms, is quite concerned that more excavation underground will add to the present unsatisfactory conditions. The Board asked Mr. Erickson to explain future plans, and reassure the Board that all is being done to correct present conditions. Mr. Erickson explained with blueprints what is to be done to remodel, and Mr. Cole, also an architect, made the sug- gestion that a membrane system and Fiberglas under the copper work might be wise. After much discussion by the Board and Mr. Erickson, it was felt that the kitchen can be better ventilated, condensa- tion can be corrected, and much can be done to make it more satis- factory to all concerned. Mr. Lurvey made a report on his last inspection of the kitchen. The rinse water was only 1600instead of the required 1800, and it was thought the lunchroom mighthave to be closed because the water,. temperature could not be held at the safe temperature. Mr. McQuillan suggested a letter be sent to the Standing School Committee reporting on the Board's inquiry into the future plans for the kitchen, and stating that the Board is anxiousthat every effort shall be made to correct and maintain healthful conditions. The Board is not in a position to approve or disapprove of remodelling plans, but will stand in readiness to insist by inspections that conditions be right when this remodelling is finished. It had been hoped that the location of the kitchen could be changed at the time of remodelling. 1958 Permits and Licenses were approved and signed by the Board for Garbage, Rubbish, and Sewage Disposal, and Child Care Centers. The Health Officer's Report for the period was read, dis- cussed and approved. Annual Reports are due by January 1. Bilis for 1957 must all be in by January 6 to come out of the 1957 appropriations. 1 Notarizing Applica- tions Silverman 15 Rumford Rd. Mr. Lurvey read a letter from the John Reardon Company asking if it is necessary to have applications for disposal permits notarized each year. Lexington is one of only two towns requiring this, and Mr. Reardon wondered if this could be dispensed with. Mr. Lurvey checked with Mr. Stevens, Town Counsel, and the Board agreed to do away with this condition in the future. Mr. Ralph Frissore has not been able to remove the garbage grinder at Silvermans, 15 Rumford Road, as ordered to do by the Health Department. Each time he has gone to comply he states the Silvermans have refused to allow him to remove the grinder. The Board will ask Mr. Frissore and the Silvermans to be present at the next Board Meeting on Friday, January 17, to discuss the matter. Mr. Lurvey will also consult the town counsel as to future steps to be taken to correct this condi- tion. The meeting adjourned at )4.Li.5 P.M. Clerk 311
