BOARD OF HEALTH MEETING
April 20, 1956
A regular meeting of the Board of Health was held in
the Selectmen's Room, Town Offices, on Friday, April 20,
1956, with Chairman McQuillan, Mr. Cole, and Mr. Lurvey
present.
The meeting was delayed from 3 to 3.30 P.M. because
the Health Office was swamped with telephone calls, parents
signing up for the second order of polio vaccine, and doctors
picking up their allotted vaccine.
Mr. Peckham, chairman of the new Methodist Church Com -
Methodist mittee, and Mr. Custance, the builder, met with the Board
Church at 3.45 P.M. to discuss a solution of the sewerage plan for
the church. Mr. Cole recommended asking Whitman & Howard,
the engineers, to make a study and suggest a plan. State
approval must be secured, too. A safe solution, but more
expensive, would be to run in the other direction. There will
be sewer for the property, probably, in the next two years,
and the present ejector pump could be connected to the swwer
then. The Board moved to reconsider the subject, and to have
Whitman & Howard make a study.
Mr. Lurvey reported that the Polio Inoculation Program
Polio is progressing nicely. Three of the nine Lexington schools
Program have had their clinics, and two Public Clinics for Pre -
School and Private School children have been held. After
vacation week a school a day will be done thru April 30,
and with a Public Clinic on Saturday, April 21, all first
inoculations will be given. Make -Up Clinics will be held
for absentees after the last school clinic. Dr. Newell
asked to be replaced on the Polio Advisory Committee, and
Dr. Pearlman was appointed.
Chairman McQuillan asked the clerk to notify the Lex-
LVNA ington Visiting Nurses Association of the new appropriation
for 1956, an increase of $350. from $1750. to $2100.
Nothing has been heard from Mrs. Alice Shannon who was
given until May 1 to connect her house to the town sewer.
Mr. Lurvey reported that Mr. Joseph Kelly, 45 Earle
45 Earle Street, is making progress in getting his property in order
Street as the Board asked. Miss Pellagrini from the State met
with Mr. Lurvey to discuss the question of rehabilitation
of the nephew.
Licenses
Mr. McQuillan asked if May 11 would be convenient for
the May Board meeting as he will be away the remaining
Fridays.
25 applications for Methyl Alcohol Licenses for 1956-57
have been received, and were approved by the Boa.rd.fpplica
tions for Animal Permits are coming in. Renewals were ap-
proved by the Board - new applications will be approved by
Mr. Lurvey first, and approved by the Board later.

Mr. McQuillan suggested that all bills and fees for the
Polio Program for materials and help be presented to the Polio
Board at the May meeting after the first inoculations are Program
all completed. The special appropriation figure of $2500
is hoped to be ample.
The Board voted to approve transportation fees to Middle-
sex County Sanatorium for Mrs. Catherine Sachetti, a new T.B.
tuberculosis patient. Case
No objection has been raised by Mr. Thomas C. Webster of Webste7
189 Burlington Street since he was notified that he was not Prema
eligible for financial aid from Lexington for the premature ture
baby born on February 2, 1956. Baby
Mr. McQuillan mentioned that Chairman of the Selectmen
Reed suggested that the Barnes Property might make a wonder- Barnes
ful Health Center for the town. Two-fifths of the expense Propel
of purchasing the property could be secured from the govern-
ment, reducing the expense to the town to the remainder.
With Lexington growing at such a pace, it might be well to
plan a Center with all health units in one central place.
The meeting adjourned at 4.50 P.M.
