BOARD OF HEALTH MEETING
July 17, 1953
A regular meeting of the Board of Health was held in the
Selectmen's Rooms , Town Office Building, on July 17, 1953 at
3.00 P.M. Chairman McQuillan and Dr. Cosgrove were present .
Mr. Jackson, Health Sanitarian, and the Clerk were also present.
Mr. Norman May appeared before the Board to discuss drainage
facilities on Ampolo Street. He stated that drainage could be
made under the road but would cost money. He agrees with the
report of Whitman & Howard but would like to know what he could
do to conform to requirements. He stated he couldn't cross
Burlington Street because of houses on other side and it would
mean dumping water into other people 's land. Ampolo

Mr. May had discussed the question with Mr. Helburn, former
owner of the land, and he said there never had been a period
when he was short of water in his well. He said there isn't any
lege and under 18 inches of loam, it is primarily sand, so there
would be no drainage problems . He seemed to feel that with the
size of the area and the number of houses , that cesspools would
be adequate. He stated that Mr. Burns proposed to install a
catch basin on Burlington Street where the water from Ampo]o S treet
could drain into, and that this probably would take care of the
situation. Mr. McQuillan stated that a letter from Mr. Burns to
this effect would be helpful to the Board. He also suggested
that Mr. May discuss this further with Mr. Jackson and make a
survey of the area, showing minimum cellar grades.
Mr. May retired at 3.30 P.M.
The Grey Nuns of 6 Eliot Road asked permission to change
their nursery school and kindergarten from the house at 13 Pelham Grey
Road to the garage at the same address. The Board advised that Nuns
Mr. Jackson take this matter up with the Board of Appeals before
granting permission.
The Board discussed with Mr. Jackson the activities of the
slaughtering house of Mr. Mons ignore, and feel that a fee should
be charged for each animal slaughtered. Also, only the person Monsig-
granted permission by the Board should do the slaughtering, and nore
requested that the following be wirtten in the minutes of this
meeting - "The Board of Health has authorized the Sanitarian to
refuse inspection of animals slaughtered by anyone other than the
person authorized as licensed slaughterer.
Mr. McQuillan suggested that Mr. Jackson discuss this matter
with Mr. Monsignore , and also check with neighboring towns as to
fee charged for slaughtering of certain animals . It was suggested
that 50 cents for pigs and l.00 for cows would be a minimum charge.
Report received from Whitman & Howard on Westwood Road development
was submitted to the Board. Letter to be sent to the P1 `in
Board approving in general this development and reserving ie right West-
to pass on each lot when application is made for permit to build. Wood

Re : Williams Road development - The Board would like a more
detailed report from Whitman & Howard as to cellar grades , length 041
of leach lines and amount of fill necessary for proper sewage
disposal. The Chairman suggested that Mr . Jackson write Whitman
& Howard suggesting that they give us more detailed information
and suggestions in their retorts .
Sunnyfield area - The Board of Health adopted the following
order - Voted: That whereas the so-called Sunnfield Sewer was
constructed in Bedford Street, Bernard Street, Calvin Street, Sunny-
Donald Street , Eldred Street, Ivan Street and Justin Street , to Field
relieve a dangerous health situation, and whereas the existence Section
of homes in that area that are not connected to the sewer represent
a continuing danger to health, it is ORDERED: that the owners of
occupants of all houses in the so-called Sunnfield Section cause them
to be connected to the sewer not later than October 1 , 1953.
It was suggested that Mr. Jackson communicate with all residents
not yet connected to the sewer.
Upon motion duly made and seconded it was voted to grant the
following permits and licenses -

The meeting adjourned at 5.00 P.M.
