SELECTMEN'S MEETING •
September 22, 1949
After a conference, the Chairman of the Board,
Mr. George W. Em$ry, polled a majority of the Board
by telephone and as a result a majority of the Board
voted to instruct and authorize the Town Counsel to
file forthwith, in the name of the Board of Selectmen,
with the Department of Public Utilities a petition
protesting the proposed plan of the Boston and Maine
Railroad to cancel two round trips on its line between
Bedford and Boston, and to request the Department of
Public Utilities to order the Boston and Maine Railroad
not to discontinue such trips until such time as there
had been a public hearing on the question of said dis-
continuance and a final decision made by the Department
of Bublic Utilities.
Acting under the above vote the Town Counsel filed
such a petition with the Department of Public Utilities
on September 22, 1949. Under date of September 23, 1949
the Department of Public Utilities wrote to the Town
Counsel acknowledging receipt of the petition and advising
that after considerstion the Commission voted to deny
the request of the Selectmen to order the Boston and
Maine Railroad to continue the operation of such trains
pending a hearing. The Commission further advised the
Town Counsel that the petition will be docuted and set
down for public hearing, the time and place of which
we will receive due notice.
Prior to filing the petition with the Department
of Public Utilities, the Town Counsel spoke on the tele-
phone with the Town Counsel of Bedford and the Town
Counsel of Arlington. Neither town has taken any steps
regarding the discontinuance of the t rains of the Boston
and Maine Railroad, but will probably make an appearance
at ,the public hearing.
