SPECIAL SELECTMEN'S MEETING
February 19, 1949
A special meeting of the Board of Selectmen was
held on Saturday, February 19, 1949, at 10;30 A.M.
There were present: Chairman Paxton, Messrs. Emery,
Driscoll and Nickerson. The Clerk was also present.
Mi`. Gay arrived later.
Mr. Donnelly and Mr. Roeder of the Fire Engineers
met with the Board. The Chairman explained that these
two individuals had been invited to discuss further their
budget for 1949.
Mr. Donnelly explained that the Fire tJnderwftters
have been consulted and that they are opposed to having
call men used to enable the department to operate seventy
hours a week. He said that with three additional menthe

Mr. Emery asked if the Engineers were opposed to
volunteer help or parttime help to sleep in the fire
station. Mr. Donnelly said he would be in favor of it
if it were possible to get call men who could be depended
upon, but he did not know whether they could get men to
work on that basis. He explained that the call men they
have already conferred with would not agree to anything
like that. Mr. Emery asked who consulted the underwriters
and Mr. Donnelly informed him that it was Mr. Fawcett.
Mr. finery asked if they had a reply in writ$ng and Mr.
Donnelly, replied in the negative.
Mr. Emery said he feels that the Engineers can give
a seventy hour week with three men in addition to volunteer
help and he believes that all the members of the Board of
Selectmen are in favor of a seventy hour week.
Mr. Donnelly said he felt something could be worked
out with some additional men, to the satisfaction of the
regular men. Ambulance
Mr. Gay asked if the Engineers had given any thought
to renovating the call force. Mr. Donnelly replied that
they would have to.

The Board discussed the possibility of drawing
up new rules and regulations for the use of the town
ambulance. It was agreed that the Fire Engineers would
prepare a new set of rules and regulations to be sub-
mitted to the Board for their consideration.
Mbssrs. Donnelly and Roeder retired at
11:20 P.M.
Mr. DeFoe met with the Board and with the except-
ion of the lunch hour budgets were discussed until
4:00 P.M.
