HomeMy WebLinkAbout1949-01-0842 SELECTMEN'S MEETING January 8, 1949 A special meeting of the Board of Selectmen was held in the Selectmen's Room, Town Office Building on Saturday morning at 9:45 biclock. Chairman Paxton, Messrs. Every, Driscoll and Nickerson were present. The Clerk was also present. The Chairman read a letter from the Town Counsel advising that the case of the Town of Lexington v. Thomas Morrison was disposed of in the Middlesex probate Court on Monday, January 3, 1949. A decree was entered enjoining Morrison engaging in the business of con- ducting auction sales of horses, cows or other cattle at 139 Spring Street. The Chairman read a letter from the Town Counsel advising that Chesley W. Teele had initiated action against Paul W. Franks and the case is now ready for trial. Mr. Lynck has had several conferences with Teele's counsel and the case can now be settled by paying Mr. Teele $100. In view of the circumstances, Mr. Lynch recommended that the case be closed by pay- ment of $100 to Mr. Teele. Mr. Every moved that, in view of the recommendation of the Town Counsel, the case be closed by payment of $100 to Mr. Teele. Mr. Nickerson seconded the motion, and it was so voted. Application was received from Mrs. Hattie Peckham, 37 Hancock Street for the renewal of a Common Victuallerts license. Mr. Emery moved that the license be renewed. Mr. Driscoll seconded the motion, and it was so voted. Application was received from Veterans of Forgign Wars, Post # 3007, requesting permission to conduct a mil,itary ball in Cary Hall on Monday evening, April 18, 1949, from S:00 P.M. until 1:00 A.M. Mr. Every moved that the use of the hall be grant- ed and considered one of the Post's free uses. Mr. Nickerson seconded the motion, and it was so voted. Budgets were then considered. The Board discussed the Assessors' Personal Services Account, particularly the salary of the present Assistant to the Secretary. The Board felt that ultimately the Assistant will assume the position of Secretary. It was decided that his salary from January 1, 1949 (43 weeks) be figured at $55, plus cc 1 10% or a maximum of *300. From then until the end of 1949 during which time he assumes the position of Secretary to the Board of Assessors his salary will be at the rate of *70 a week. His salary will not be supplemented by any monies allocated by the Assessors in the budget, and his total in any capacity, over a period of two years, would reach the amount of $4100. During the discussion of budgets, the Board conferred with Mr. Cronin and advised him of the salary schedule as recommended by the Board. The meeting adjourned at 12:00 noon. A true record, Attest: 43
