HomeMy WebLinkAbout1948-12-2030 Gasoline Hearing Public Works Rates Pipe SELECTMEN'S MEETING December 20, 1948 A regular meeting of the Board of Selectmen was held in the Selectmen's Room on Monday evening, December 20, 1948 at 7:30 P.M. There were present Chairman Paxton, Messrs. Emery, Gay, Driscoll and Nickerson. The Clerk was also present. At 7:35 P.M. a hearing was declared open upon the application of John D. Pauley for permission to install one undergroLi d tank for the storage of 1,000 gallons -of gasoline on premises at 189 Wood Street. A notice of the hearing was read by the Chairman. Mr. Pauley, the applicant, was the only person present. He said that he is doing farming and this gasoline will be for private use. Mr. Emery moved that the application be approved and the license signed. Mr. Gay seconded the motion, and it was so voted. Mr. Pauley retired at 7:49 P.M. Mr. DeFoe, Supt. of Public Works,, and Mr. Garrity, Supt. of Parks and Playgrounds, met with the Board to discuss the latter's budget. The Chairman asked if the Selectmen desired to have the hourly rates for men in the Public Works Depart- ment increased and retro -active to January, or to become effective April first. It was decided that in as much as the men in the Public Works Department received a blanket increase last April any further increase in hourly pay rates should become effective April first. After discussing the budget presented by Mr. Garrity he retired at 8:10 P.M. Mr. DeFoe said that he would like to include as he did last year, a tentative order for cast iron water pipe, hydrants, and fittings, which would be entirely subject to approval by Town Meeting. He stated that he will need 15,400 feet of 12" and he believed a total of 16,000 feet as a tentative order. He stated that he would need 3,000 feet of 8" pipe, all tentative, of which 1,700' looks certain accord- ing to the information received ffom the Planning Board. He said that he would need 1,200 feet of 6" pipe but suggests ordering 4,000 feet. Mr. DeFoe informed the Board that this amount of pipe will cost in the vicinity of 4 90,000., all subject to funds being appropriated at the annual town meeting held in March. The Chairman suggested that Mr. DeFoe obtain prices and submit them to the Board. 1 31 Mr. DeFoe informed the Board that an inspection was made of the compressor at the Public Works Building and the State Inspector is not satisfied in - as much as it does not. comply with State standards. Lester Andrews quoted a figure of approximately $780 to fix it. Field Machinery Co. submitted a price of $ 582 for a new compressor and an allowance of $100 for the old units.. He explained that he has money enough to pur- chase a compressor. .The Chairman said that he thought by December 27th Mr. DeFoe would know how New much money he has left in his account and that he Compressor also would know more about the unit that he desires to purchase, and suggestedthat he bring this subject up again next week. The Chairman read a letter from Mrs. Ryan, 36 Ledgelawn Avenue, stating .that the avenue, although passable is in very poor condition. A copy of the Highway letter was given to Mr. DeFoe and he agreed to con- tact Mrs. Ryan. The Chairman read a letter from the State Depart- ment of Public Works advising that the State will Snow remove the snow from the end of the State Highway on Removal Maple Street to Massachusetts Avenue. The Chairman read a letter from Edward W. Sibley complimenting the Department of Public Works relative Letter of to the construction of the sewer in Eliot Road. Mr. commend - Emery moved that a copy of the letter be posted on the ation bulletin board of the Public Works Building. Mr. Dris- coll seconded the motion, and it was so voted. Mr. De Foe retired at 8:35 P.M. Tax A letter was received from Joseph A. Moretti, Title 8 Rindge Avenue, offerring $25.00 for lots 189-190- 191. The Committee on Tax Title Property recommended that the town receive $25.00 for each lot. Mr. Driscoll moved that the proposal to sell the lots be advertised in the Lexington Minute Man and that further consider- ation be given the offer. Mr. Beery seconded the motion, and it was so voted. An application was received from William F. Ready, License 109 Massachusetts Avenue, East Lexington, for a second denied class dealerts license for business to be operated at 3 Bow Street. A character reference was received from the Chief of Police and read by the Chairman. Mr. Gay 32 moved that the application be denied. Mr. Emery seconded the motion, and it was so voted. Upon motion of Mr. Emery, seconded by Mr. Gay it was voted to approve the following licenses: Renewals Partsidgets Food Shop L. J. Foss Lawrence J. Selig William Viano 1790 Mass. Ave. 1234 Mass.. Ave. Common Victualler 11 tt 2nd Class Agent Sunday Movies The Board approved the request of the Sacred Heart and St. Brigidts Churches to conduct a salvage drive on January 2, 1949.
