SELECTMEN'S MEETING
October 9, 1948
A special meeting of the Board of Selectmen was
held on Saturday morning, October 9, 1948, at 9:30 a.m.
Chairman Paxton, Messrs. Emery, Driscoll and Nickerson
were present. The Clerk and Town Counsel were also
present.
The meeting was called for the purpose of discussing
votes to be presented at the Special Town Meeting on
Monday, October 18, 1948.
Mr. DeFoe, Superintendent of Public Works, met with
the Board and explained the amounts needed for Road
Machinery, Sewer Projects and widening Waltham Street.
He stated that apparently Waltham Street widening had
been incorrectly f i red inasmuch as the amount asked for
in March, 1948 was $7,900. and it will actually cost,
$20,000.
At 10:30 a.m. Mr. DeFoe retired and the following
members of the Appropriation Committee met with the Board:
Chairman Winlock, Messrs. Cleveland, Hall, Patterson, Smith,
Tarbox, Tucker, and Vadeboncourr. Mr. Walker, the Town
Accountant was also present.
Mr. Nickerson left the meeting at 10:45 a.m.
The Appropriation Committee had approved $7,500. under
Article 2 and $ 4,000. under Article 3 as compared with
8,000. and $ 6,000. approved by the Selectmen.
The Chairman of the Board explained that in Jtine the
Selectmen received a letter from the Welfare Department
requesting $ 8,000. for Old Age Assistance - Aid and Expenses
and $ 6,000. for Public Welfare - Aid and Expenses.
Mr. Walker stated that he had gone over these figures
and was of the opinion that the amounts as reduced by the
Appropriation Committee's figures, providing a letter was
received from the Board of Public Welfare advising that the
sums would be sufficient for the balance of the year.
The Chairman asked if the Board of Selectmen desired
to go on record as approving the acquisition and installation
of parking meters. However, it was decided to withhold any
definite motion until receipt of the Planning Board's report
on this subject.
The Appropriation Committee retired at 11:25 R.m.

Mr. Lynch gave the Board a brief report of the
developments pertaining to the auctions at the Swenson
Farm and also the case of Fulton Brown. He explained
that Fulton Brown's attorney had discussed the case
with him. He asked if Mr. Brown removed the cement
block housing and the roof would the Board be satisfied.
Mr. Lynch stated that if the Board agreed and this were.
done the Bill in Equity would be dismissed, but could
be renewed at any time. He stated that it is up to the
Board whether or not they desire to give Mr. Brown this
relief or leave it up to the Court. The case will go
on trial the week of November 8, 1948 but may not be
reached until January. Mr. Lynch explained to the Board
that if relief is given by the Board and doeon.ot satisfy
the Town, the burden will be on the Selectmen. It was
decided to discuss this matter further some time after
the Special Town Meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 11:50 a.m.
