SELECTMEN'S MEETING
January 6, 1947
A regular meeting of the Board of Selectmen was
held in the Selectmen's Room, Town Office Building
on Monday evening, January 6, 1947 at 7:30 p.m.
Chairman Potter, Messrs. Locke, Sarano and Paxton
were present. The Clerk was also present.
' At 7:30 p.m. Mr. Alan Adams appeared before the
Board. The Chairman stated that the Board would like
Publishipg to discuss with him his request for permission to
Budgets publish the budgets presented by the various departments.
Mr. Adams said that his angle was to publish them as a
straight news story with the expiation that they, as
printed, are only preliminary. He said that he thought
the information, particularly to town meeting members,
might be instructive. Mr. Adams said that he would
include an explanation on any budgets that might other-
wise be misleading. Mr. Paxton suggested that he contact
the heads of the various departments before publishing
the information.
Mr. Adams retired at 8:04 p.m.
Letter was received from Robert C. Merriam relative
Insurance to policy #118-1294, expiring on February 21, 1947, which
covers a frame stable at 24 Sylvia Street. This property.
has recently been sold,under tax title, to the former
owner. The Clerk was instructed to so advise Mr.
Merriam and request him not to renew the coverage.
Chairman read a letter from Mr. John H. Reardon, USO
Area Director informing the Board that arrangements have
been completed to move his office on January 2, 1947 to the
USO Center in Waltham.

Mr. Carroll's letter relative to establishing
salaries for Assistant Registrars was"held over from
the last regular meeting of the Board. The Chairman
reported that he had conferred with Mr. Spencer and
the arrangements which have been made are agreeable to
him.
It was decided to approve Mr. Carroll's recommendation
that the Assistant Registrars be paid at the rate of
1.00 an hour:., and that the amounts be put through

as Expenses and not Personal Services, thus eliminating the
necessity of making any tax deductions.
Application was received for a certificate of Cert.
character from Winfield S. Couette, 4 Wachusett Circle, of
who has filed an application with the Secretary df the inc.
Commonwealth for a certificate" of incorporation under
the name of Massachusetts iea1 Estate Association.
Satisfactory reference was received from the Chief
of Police.
Mr. Locke moved that the certificate be approved
and signed. Mr. Paxton seconded the motion, and it was
so voted.
The Clerk informed the Board that the Town Clerk
has presented a bill for payment, in the amount of Transfer
110.00 for bo:o'th lighting in the various precincts for
the election last November. Inasmuch as the balance in
the account from which this item may be paid is only
19.13 it will be necessary to request a tranafer.
Mr Paxton moved that the Appropriation Committee
be requested to tranafer the sum of 870 from the Reserve
Fund to the Elections Expenses - Jurisdiction Selectmen
Acdou.nt Mr. Sarano seconded the motion, and it was
so voted.
Notice was received from the State Department of
Conservation, Division of Forestry, that the Selectmen Forest
of all towns shall annually in January appoint a forest Warden
warden; such appointment not to become effective unless
approved by the forester.
Mr. Sarano moved that Deputy Chief Roy A. Cook he
re-appminted Forest Warden in the Town of Lexington for
a term expiring December 31, 1947; subject to the
approval of the Director of Forestry. Mr. Paxton
seconded the motion, and it was so voted.
Application was received from the War Parents of
America for permission to conduct a meeting in Estabrook
Hall on Thursday evening, January 16, 1947 from 8:00 p.m.
until 10:00 p.m.
Mr. Locke moved that the use of the hall be granted
free of charge. Mr. Sarano seconded the motion, and it
was so voted.
The Chairman informed the Board that Mr. Tobin,
Federal Government Veterans Representative, advised him
that it is tossible for the Selectmen to appoint a

Veterans' Veterans' Agent, who of course if a World War II
Agent veteran:, as an honorary position at $1.00 and then
employ a secretary to do the clerical work. He
said this procedure is being followed in Concord.
The Ch,irman said also that there is the possibility
of having a joint Advisory Board and Director with
the Town of Bedford.
It was decided to invite Col. Barry to meet with
the Board next Monday night in an effort to determine
what duties a Veterans' Agent would have.
The Chairman said that Mr. Tobin would like
permission to hang a small sign, under the. Town
Offices sign, at the entrance to the front driveway,
in connection with his office. The Board had no
objection to a small Bigg being hung on hooks
the days Mr. Tobin is in his office.
The Chairman said that several requests have been
received for coasting on Farmcrest Avenue.
Mr. Paxton moved that Farmcrest Avenue be posted
for coasting and that necessary steps be taken to
make this legal and include it in our present Traffic
Rules and Regulations. Mr.' Sarano seconded the
motion, and it was so voted.
Mr. Paxton informed the Board that Mr. David
A. Rix, 503 Waltham Street, had called him relative
to the drainage of Clematis Brook. He said that
he had been given to understand that something
wo31d be done this year, and he is planning to
develop his property.
Mr. Sarano moved that the Supt. of Public Works
be requested to include an item in his 1947 budget
to provide for Clematis Brook drainage. Mr. Paxton
seconded the motion, and it, was so voted.
