SELECTMEN'S MEETING
September 24, 1945.
A regular meeting of the Board of Selectmen was held
in the Selectmen's Room, Town Office Building, on Monday
evening, September 24, 1945, at 7 :30 p.m. The members were
notified of this meeting by a notice mailed on September
22, 1945. Messrs. Potter, Sheldon and Sarano were present.
The Clerk was also present. In the absence of Mr. Locke,
Mr. Potter served as Chairman.
Authorize At 7 :30 p.m. Colonel Barry appeared before the Board.
Install'tn He stated that Mr. John J. Garrity, Supt. of Parks
Two Street and Playgrounds, had expressed a desire to install two
Lights on street lights at the playground, between the end of Clarke
Center Play- Street and the grandstand.
ground Road Mr. Saran moved that Colonel Barry be authorized to
request the installation of two street lights on the play-
ground road, between Clarke Street and the grandstand, to
complete the present circuit. Mr. Sheldon seconded the
motion, and it was so voted.
Graziano Colonel Barry said that he had received a Verbal request

Authorize Colonel Barry informed the Board that there is a leak
Leak in in the boiler in Cary Memorial Hall which can be welded, but
Clary Boiler may possibly have to be torn down. He said that the American
Repaired Radiator Company who manufactured the boiler is unable to
repair it as they have no help. The only other concern who
would submit a bid was the R. E. Andrews Company of Brighton.
It will cost $125.00 to repair the leak.
Mr. Sarano moved that Colonel Barry be authorized to
have the leak in the boiler repaired at a cost not to exceed
$125.00. Mr. Sheldon seconded the motion, and it was so
voted.
Colonel Colonel Barry informed the Board that Colonel Ross
Ross Rent would like to rent the bulldozer to fill in the open cellar

Open Mr. Sarano moved that Colonel Barry be authorized to

seconded the motion, and it was so voted.

Colonel Barry stated that there are four large V-plows,
purchased in November, 1940 at a cost of $300.00 each, and Clean
only one has ever been used. He said that the other three Paint &
have been out in the open for five years; and are badly in Retain
need of painting. He asked whether or not any of the plows V-Plows
should be disposed of.
The Board felt, however , that the plows should be cleaned,
painted, put under cover and retained by the Town.
Colonel Barry retired at 7:45 p.m.
k letter was received from M. Helen Fitz-Gerald, 165 Held Over
Brooks Avenue, Arlington, offering $400.00 for Lots 40 and Fitzgeralc

The offer was referred to Mr. Potter for a report. 41 and 41

A letter was received from Alfred R. Batstone, 49
Bartlett Avenue, Lexington, offering $26.00 for Lots 86- Offer $26.

A previous offer had been received for these same lots 86-89
from Mr. John MacMillan of West Somerville, Mass. , who was Bartlett
advised that an offer of $300.00 would be entertained. Avenue
The Clerk was instructed to write Mr. Batstone that the
Board of Selectmen could not consider' an offer as low as
$26.00.
The Board gave further consideration to Mrs. Thomas E. Sell
Hamilton's offer of $350.00 for Lots 627, 628, Freemont Freemont
Street; 607-616 inc. , Homestead Street ; and Lots 655-659 inc. , &
Homestead Street, Lexington. Iomesteac
A proposal to sell these lots was advertised in the Lots to
September 20, 1945 issue of the Lexington Minute-Man. No Mrs.
persons contacted the Selectmen's Office as a result of the Hamilton
advertisement.
Mr. Sheldon moved that the offer be accepted, and that
the lots be sold and conveyed to Mrs. Hamilton. Mr. Sarano
seconded the motion, and it was so voted.
An offer of $150.00 for Lots 4-6 inc. , Sullivan Street,
received from Sabatino Iodice was held aver until the next Proposal
meeting of the Board; said meeting being this evening. Sell Lots
An offer of $160.00 was also received from Mrs. C. B. 4-6
Wildes, 74 Winter Street, for these same lots. Sullivan

The Board gave further consideration to Mr. F. A. Lots 9
Currier's offer of $500.00 for Lots 7 and 8A, Tower Road, BA Tower

A proposal to sell these lots was advertised in the Sweet
September 20, 1945 issue of the Lexington Minute-Man.
An offer of $550.00 was also received for these same
lots from George H. and Marjorie E. Sweet, 12 Independence
Avenue, Lexington.

Sell Mr. Sarano moved that the highest offer be accepted,
Lots and that Lots 7 and BA, Tower Road, Lexington, be sold and
7-8A conveyed to George H. and Marjorie E. Sweet. Mr. Sheldon
Tower Rd. seconded the motion, and it was so voted.
Sell The Board gave further consideration to Mrs. John
Lots Demasots offer of $225.00 for Lots 15 and 16, Block 23,
15 & 16 Dexter Road, Lexington.
Dexter A proposal to sell these lots was advertised in the
Rd. to September 20, 1945 issue of the Lexington Minute-Man.
Mrs. An offer of $250.00 was received for these same lots
Fitz- from Joseph J. Napoli, 55 Gleason Road.
gerald A third offer in the amount of $265.00 was received
from Mrs . Ida Fitzgerald, 5 Parker Street, Lexington.
Mr. Sarano moved that the highest offer be accepted and
that Lots 15 and 16, Block 23, Dexter Road, be sold and
conveyed to Mrs. Ida Fitzgerald. Mr. Sheldon seconded the
motion, and it was so voted.
Myers A letter was received from Mrs. Flora Myers, 65 Bridge
Offer Street, Lexington, offering $100.00 for Lot 160, Farmhurst,
Too Low Section. 4, Bridge Street, Lexington.
Lot 160 Mr. Sheldon moved that Mrs. Myers be advised that the
Bridge Board of Selectmen will entertain an offer of not less than

Offer A letter was received from P.F.C. Anthony D. Gigante,
$150.00 56$ Berkshire Street, Cambridge, offering $150.00 for Lots

A letter was received from J. P. Waddleton, 11 Norton
Offer Road, Lexington, offering $125.00 for Lots 92 and 93, Brandon
Too Low Street, Lexington.
Mr. Sarano moved that Mr. Waddleton be informed that the
Board of Selectmen will entertain an offer of not less than
$225.00 for four lots, 90, 91, 92, and 93, Brandon Street.
Mr. Sheldon seconded the motion, and it was so voted.
Held A letter was received from T. A. Galbraith, 178 Waltham
Over Street, Lexington, offering $200.00 each for Lots 76 and 77,
Waltham Street, Lexington.
The offer was referred to Mr. Potter for a report.
Letter was received from Mr. Raymond L. White, Secretary,
Transfers advising that the Appropriation Committee had voted to trans-
fer the sum of $1,100.00 from the Reserve Fund to the Public
Works Building - Wages -& Expenses Account to make repairs in
the Sprinkler System. The Appropriation Committee further voted
to transfer the sum of $95.05 from the Reserve Fund to the
Printing Town Reports Account. This amount is to cover the
cost of printing 100 copies of the school report and 100 copies

of the Town Accountant' s report.
IIA letter was received from John A. Russell, Dog Officer, Request
informing the Board that he has used the amount appropriated Transfer

requested a transfer in the amount of $50.00 for the remaind- Officer

Mr. Sheldon moved that the Appropriation Committee be
requested to transfer the sum of 650.00 from the Reserve Fund
to the Dog Officer' s - Expense Account. Mr. Sarano seconded
the motion, and it was so voted.
A letter was received from Mr. James J. Carroll, Town
Treasurer, together with a deed furnished by Mr. S. R. Wright-
ington,lTown Counsel, with instructions to obtain the signatures
of the Board of Selectmen.
Mr. Carroll stated that a parcel of land, while being Deed
held as Tax Title, was sold; although not legally recorded, Fore- ;
The person who purchased the property discovered that it was Closed
to be foreclosed and immediately paid all taxes and charges Land
due. However, foreclosure proceeding had been started and Mr.
Carroll was notified by the Registry of Deeds that they could
not forestall the foreclosure. He further stated that it
would be necessary to have a new deed from the Town conveying
the property to the present owner.
IIAp-dication was received from the Chamber of Commerce for Use
permiss on to use Cary Hall on the evening of October 18, 1945 of
from 8 )0 P.M. to 9:30 P.M. for a lecture. Hall

free of charge. Mr. Sarano seconded the motion, and it was so of

Ap lication was received from the Lexington Field and Field
Garden lub requesting permission to use Estabrook Hall on and
the eve ings of October 25, 1945 from 7 :30 P.M. to 10:30 P.M+; Garden
March 2 , 1946, from 8:00 P.M. to 10:30 P.M. ; April 25, 1946, Use
from 8 :00 P.M. to 10:30 P.M. ; and May 23, 1946, from 7:45 P.M. of Hall
to 10:30 P.M.
Mr, Sheldon moved that the uses of the hall be granted,
free of charge. Mr. Sarano seconded the motion, and it was so
voted.
Th Clerk informed the Board that Commander Brown of the
Veteran of Foreign Wars had spoken to Mr. Rowse about the
$25.00 harge for renting Cary Hall for the purpose of conduct-
ing a P nny Sale on November 16, 1945. Disc.
Mr Rowse informed Commander Brown that he would bring on V.F.W.the mat er up at the Selectmen's Meeting to find out whether Penny
or not the charge would be reduced. Sale

Barnaby Application was received from C. E. Barnaby, 1804

Bowling Massachusetts Avenue , Lexington, for the renewal of his
Alley License permit to maintain six bowling alleys.
Signed Mr. Sarano moved that the permit be granted. Mr.
Sheldon seconded the motion, and it was so voted.
Community The Clerk informed the Board that Mrs. Webster
Fund Use Thomas had requested the use of six tables and sixteen
of Tables °hail's to be used for the Community Fund Center.
& Chairs The Board had no objections.
The deeds to Lots 32 and 33, Block 22, Dexter Road;
Deeds Lots 90-94, Albermarle Avenue ; and Lot 101, Hilltop
Signed Avenue, having been prepared by Mr. Wrightington, Town
Counsel, were signed by the Board.
