HomeMy WebLinkAbout1945-04-30 159 SELECTMEN'S MEETING April 30, 1945 A regular meeting of the Board of Selectmen was held in the Selectmen ' s Room, Town Office Building, on Monday evening, April 30, 1945 at 7 :30 p.m. Chairman Locke, Messrs. Potter, Sarano and Sheldon were present. The Clerk was also present. At 7:30 p.m. Mr. James J. Carroll, Town Clerk appeared before the Board for the drawing of three jurors. Mr. Ashton G. Little, Salesman, York Street was drawn to serve on Criminal Business at Cambridge beginning the first Monday in June, 1945. Jurors Mr. James C . Puffer, Banker, 10 Richard Road, was drawn to serve on Civil Business, Second Session at Cambridge beginning the first Monday in June. Mr. Albert B. MacKay, Plumber, 24 Fletcher Avenue, was drawn to serve on Civil Business, First Session, at Cambridge beginning the first Monday in June. The Chairman read a letter from Mr. Carroll, Town Decennial Clerk, advising the Board that the total count as taken by Census the enumerators for the Decennial Census of 1945 is 12,533. This indicates a decrease of 600 in the population. Mr. Carroll retired at 7:45 p.m. and Mr. Paxton appeared before the Board. Mr. Simeone ' s request to operate a public dump on Maple Street was heldover from last week. Deny After further considering the matter, Mr. Sarano Public moved that the request be denied. Mr. Sheldon seconded Dump on the motion, and it was so voted. Maple St. Mr.. Paxton said that he had attended a meeting at ,. Cambridge pertaining to the mosquito control project. He stated that Mr. Hooker, City Engineer of Cambridge, was elected Chairman and Mr. Perine of Belmont was elected Mosquito Secretary. Mr. Hinchey from Waltham was appointed Super- Control intendent at a salary of $250.00 per month. Mr. Paxton Project stated that there would be two inspectors , a foreman and laborers. The inspectors and the foreman will receive $1.20 per hour, and the laborers will receive a $1.00 per hour. Mr. Paxton said that the project may want to rent some trucks, and he advised the group that he had two trucks vtiich they could hire. Mr. Paxton retired at 7 :40 p.m. 160 co a 071 The Chairman read a letter from the Town Accountant State furnishing data requested by the Board pertaining to the Retirement State Retirement System which some employees have requested System the Board tb accept. It was decided to hold the matter over until next week when all the members of the Board will be present. A letter from the Employers? Liability Assurance Corp- Insurance oration Limited pertaining to the coverage of overhanging on signs at various locations in the Town was held over from Signs the last meeting of the Board. Mr. McDonnell, Agent, stated that a further premium was due the company from each of the individuals as of April 1, 1945, and he felt that they would certain ly object to paying a premium, inasmuch as all the insured signs must be taken down before January 1, 1946. Mr. McDonnell telephoned the Selectmen' s Office on April 27th, and advised the Clerk that the additional premium of each assured is $3.00, there being 15 insured. Mr. McDonnell suggested waiving the insurance requirements on the signs which are now left. The Board felt that the Town should not waive the insurance, and that it would be to the best interests of the Town if the sum of $45.00 were paid. Mr. Potter moved that the Town pay the further premium mentioned in Mr. McDonnell' s letter of April 18th, which appears not to exceed $45.00. Mr. Sheldon seconded the motion, and it was solvoted. Application was received from Manfred L. Warren, Use of Principal of the Lexington Senior High School, requesting Hall the use of Cary Memorial Hall on the evening of June 7, 1945 for the purpose of conducting graduation exercises: Mr. Sarano moved that the use of the hall be granted, free of charge. Mr. Potter seconded the motion, and it was so voted. Upon motion of Mr. Potter, seconded by Mr. Sheldon, Licenses it was voted to approve the f ollawing licenses : Lexington Bowladrome 1698 Mass. Ave. Cesspool The Clerk informed the Board that Mr. Spencer had not Assistant been reappointed Assistant Assessor. Assessor Mr. Potter moved that Mr. Frederick J. Spencer be App'td. appointed Assistant Assessor in the Town of Lexington for a term expiring December 31, 1945. Mr. Sarano seconded the motion, and it was so voted. 161 At 8 :25 p.m. Mr. Clyde E. Steeves, Chairman of the -Board 1945 of Assessors, appeared before the Board. Tax Mr. Steeves informed the Board that the 1945 tax rate Rate had been set at 127.00.
