SELECTMEN'S MEETING
January 22, 1945.
A regular meeting of the Board of Selectmen was
held in the Selectmen's Roams, Tem Office Building, en
Monday evening, January 22, 1945, at 7:30 P.M. The
members were notified of this meeting by a notice nailed
January 18, 1945. Chairman Locke, Messrs. Potter, Rowse,
Saran() and Sheldon were preaent. The Clerk wan also
present.
At 7830 P.M. Mr. James J. Carroll, Town Clerk,
appeared before the Board for the_drawing of three jurors.
John E. Johnson, Roofer, 8 Cary Avenue, was drawn
to serve on the Firat Session, Criminal Business, at
Cambridge, beginning tueaday, March 6, 1945.
Frank J. Love, Jr., Boston Edison Company, 3
Wallis Court, was drawn to serve on the First Session,
Civil Business, at Cambridge, beginning Mondgr, � ch 5, 1945.
Joseph Johnston, Greenskeep.er, 14 Walnut Street,
Wes drawn to serve on the Second Session, Civil Business,
at Cambridge, beginning Monday, March 5, 1945.
Mr. Carroll asked the Board Whether or not it would
be advisable to commence the. Decennial. Census Listing.
He said that if he were to start now it would be necessary
to request a transfer because there is no money available
until the appropriation in March.
The Board felt that it would be better to wait until
after Town Meeting before expenses were incurred relative
to the Census.
Mr. Carroll retired at 7:45 P.M., and Yr. Paxton'
mppeared before the Board.
The Chairman stated that a hearing was scheduled to
be held on February 9, 1945 at 10800 P.M. relative to
Hearing on the Bedford, Concord, Lincoln relocation of Virginia
Virginia Road in Concord, and requested Mr. Paxtbn to attend on
Road behalf of the Town.
Mr. Paxton retired at 8:05 P.M., and Mr. John A.
Lyons, Chairman of the Board of Public Welfare, appeared
before the Board.

Salaries
The Chairman stated that the question had arisen
pertaining to the control of Civil Service over salaries.
MEr. Lyons stated that the Civil Service has a
Statutory right to set the salaries, and the schedule
calla for step -rate increase which become effective Whether
the Board of Selectmen approve or not.

Mr. Rowse. asked if the bonus were added as a salary
increase would the Board of Publio Welfare give the Clerks
• the advantage of a step -rate increase.
Mr. Lyons said that he would obtm n full information
relative to the Civil Service increases and advise the
Board..
The Chairman said that in view of a r sport received Town
from Mrs. Casey the Board of Selectmen were in favor of Physician
• discontinuing the appointment of a Tan Physician at a
yearly salary, and to pay Whatever physician is called
for each visit.
Mr.. Lyons said that he would be in.'favor of this
fiction.
The Chairman reads. letter from Stephen F. Hamblin
stating that thereis a bill coming-bnrat.the-State
House requiring all Cities and Towns of a pertain population
to have an official officer for rehabilitation, under Official;.
state control in pars, to meet all returned veterans. Officers

Mr. Lyohe said that this was the first he had heard
of any such bill.
It was decided to contact Representative Ferguson,
and to ask him for a report relative to. this matter.
Mr. Lyons retired at 8:25 P.M.
The Chairman read a letter from John Lamont,
Health Inspector, relative to an.alledged complaint con-
cerning the use of the Newcomb & Dailey Garage on Bedford
Street. Mr. Lamont stated that the garage is owned by Newcomb &
Eugene Viano and rented to H. J. Halloran who uses it Daily
for the purpose of storing his trucks during the cold Garage
weather. He further stated that the garage is kept alaan Report
and Mr. Halloran has agreed to vacate the premises not
later than April 1, 1945, at which time he -will sprgy and
disinfect the building, and thus eliminate the possibility
of a nuisance from flies or any offensives odor.

A letter was_recelved.from.harold,T. Cowan offering
$50.00 for Lot 32:, Summit-Avenue,.Lex.ngton.
Cowan Upon motion.of Mr. Sheldon,seconded by. mi. Berate,
Tax Title it was voted to advise. Mr. Cowan thatthe lowe@t price
Offer acceptable to the. Board for this particular lot is
$75.00.
A letter was received from Helen H. May offering
$10.00 each for .Lota 1, 3, 4, Block 73, Pine Street,
and lots 1-7 inclusive, Block 74, Valley Road, Lexington.
The offer washeld over for one week for further
investigation.
An application was received from the Mizutp_xlin
Use of Sportsman's Club, I. for the use of Eatabrook hall on
Hall the evening of January .31, 1945, from 8:00 P.Y.
to 10:00 P.M. for a meeting.
Mr. Rowse movedthat. the use of the hallbe granted,
free of.charge. Mr. Sheldon aeconded.the motion, and
it was so voted.

finally decided too hold the Adjourned Town Meeting on
Monday evening, aroh.28, 1945.
At 8:30 P.M. the following members of the Appropriation
Committee appeared before the Board to discuss. budgets:
Chairman Hoyt, Masora. Winlock,. J. Milton Brown, onald
Brown, ewha11, Hynes., ..M ¥r. White 8x -officio and
Town Accountant.
The Clerk retired at 8:30 P.M. and returned to the
meeting at 8:50 P.Y. . .

The salary of the Assistant Town Engineer was
