HomeMy WebLinkAbout1944-10-09SELECTMEN'S MEETING October 9, 1944. A regular meeting of the Board of Selectmen was held .in the Selectmen's Room, town Office Building, on Monday evening, October 9, 1944 at 7:30 P.M. Chairman Locke, Messrs. Potter` and Sarano were present. The Clerk was also present. The members were notified of this meeting by a notice mailed October 4, 1944. At 7:30 P.M. Mr. Paxton appeared before the Board. He stated that he had received information from the Boston Edison Company advising that the restrictions on street lights have been greatly relaxed and it is possible, under some conditions, to have street lights installed. He'said that he would check the requests which have been received for street lights and write the Boston Edison Company relative to those street lights which would not require a Town Vote. He retired at 7:40 P.M. The Chairman read a letter from Mr. Wrightington, Town Counsel, stating that he had notified iirs. Bridget Leary that the Town is not liable for damages resulting from the hurricane. This is in reply to an alleged. claim for damages coused by. the falling of a tree on her 'house at 16 Muzzey Street, Lexington, during the hurricane. The Chairman read a letter from 1r. Wrightington stating that the Selectmen have regularly appointed their own Clerk since 'larch, 1926. Mr. Wkightington said that in hiss opinion this conforms to O.L. Chapter 66, Section and the practice should be continued. Wrightington has talked with Mr. Carroll, Town Clerk, and has also written him on the matter and he believes that he is now satisfied that the practice is appropriate. He further stated that the vote of the Town on April 15, 1913, adjusting the .salary of the Town Clerk whereby he was als to act as Clerk of the Board of Selectmen was invalid because of the provisions of the Statute which was in f orce at that time. Mr. Wrightington believes that it is not necessary to revoke the vote. The Chairman read a letter from the Probation Officer of the'District Court of Central Middlesex enclosing Keith'Windows a check in the amount of $20.00 for restitution collected for damage done to the Barnes Property. Robert Moniz and Broken Charles Casella were before the court on a delinquency Barnes complaint and their case continued until December 2, 1944 Prop. without a finding. 589 Street Lights Leary Tree Claim Legal Op. jegal Op. Clerk Bd. of Selectmen 0 590 Tax Title Offer Held Over Disband Com. on Public Safety Use of Hall Denied League Women Voters Chamber ommerce Use of Hall War Parents Use of Hall The Chairman read a letter from Forrest Knapp stating that he is still interested in purchasing Lot 191, Middle Street, for which the Board is asking the sum of $200.00 Mr. Knapp stated that he is in a position to Pay $100.00 down and the balance of $100.00 within six months. M. Potter moved that a proposal to sell Lot 191, Middle Street, 1'exington, be advertised in the Lexington Minute -Man, and that further consideration be given the offer at the next meeting of the Board. Mr. Sarano seconded the motion, and it was so voted. A letter was received from John R. Marques, 52 Menotomy Road, Arlingtonoffering the sum of $300.00 for Lot 9A, Tower Road, Lexington. It was decided to have Mr. Potter investigate this particular lot, and the offer was held over until the next meeting of the Board. The Chairman read a letter from Melville W. Webb, Chairman of the Lexington Committee on Public Safety, stating that the Committee had voted to remove some of the excess telephones in the Report Center. He further stated that the Executive Committee would not disband until they had been so advised the Lloard of Selectmen. Lexington Sarano moved that the Committee on Public Safety be disbanded and an expression of gratitude be extended to the men and women who have served on the various committees. '4r. Potter seconded the motion, and it was so voted. The Chariman read a letter from Gretchen Reed, 40 Wachusett Drive, requesting the use of Estabrook hall on Friday evening, October 27, 1944 for a meetingcof the League of Women Voters. The board felt that some question might well be raised as to the use of the building for this purpose coming as it does so near election time. Mr. Sarano moved that the use of the hall be denied. W. Potter seconded the motion, and it -was so voted. Application was received frem the Lexington Chamber of Commerce for the use of Extabrook Hall on the evening of October 26, 1944 from 7:30 P.M. until 10:30 P.M. for a business meeting and lecture. Mr. Potter moved that the use of the hall be granted, free of charge. Mr. Sarano seconded the motion, and it was so voted Application was received from the War Parents of America, Inc., Chapter Number #1, for the use of $atabrook Hall on Friday evening, October 26, 1944, frcan 8:OOP.M. until 10:30 P.M. for a regular meeting. 1 591 Mr. Morse appeared before the Board and was advised by the Chairman of the Board that a request had previously been received for the use of Estabrook Hall on that evening. Mr. Morse, therefore, changed his request to Friday evening, October 27th. Mr. Potter moved that the use of the hall be granted, free of charge. Mr. Sarano seconded the motion, and it was so voted The Chairman informed the 3oard that Miss Ormond Use of of the Rationing Board had requested the use of the Selectmen's Selectmen's Room on the afternoon of Friday, October 13, Room 1944 from 1:30 P.M. until 4:30 P.M. for a Regional O.P.A. Meeting. O.P.A. The Board had no objection to the room being used for thit purpose. The Clerk informed the Board th t it had been the austoin to close the Town Offices on October 12, 1944, and upon motion of Mr. Potter, seconded by i r. Sarano, it was voted to close the Town Offices on October 12, 1944 which is a Legal Holiday, and that the various offices be notified. Statement of expenditures of work done under Chapter 90, was signed by the Board. The meeting adjourned at 8:20 P.M. A true record, Attest: Close T own Offices , October 12th
