SELECTMEN'S MEETING 07
November 8, 1943
A regular meeting of the Board of Selectmen was
held in the Selectmen' s Room, Town Office Building, on
Monday evening, November 8, 1943, at 7 :30 P.M. Chairman
Rowse, Messrs. Potter, Locke and Sarano were present.
The Clerk was also present.
At 7:30 P.M. Mr. James J. Carroll appeared before
the Board for the drawing of three jurors.
Mr. Frank E. Cowdrey, bus driver, 353 Mass. Avenues
was drawn to serve on Civil Business at Cambridge beginning
Jurors November 29, 1943.
Mr. Geza Hauck, mechanic, 202 Lincoln Street, was
drawn to serve on Civil Business at Cambridge beginning
November 29, 1943.
Mr. Alton C. Dowling, mechanic, 27 Percy Road, was
drawn to serve on Criminal Business at Cambridge beginning
December 6, 1943.
Mr. Carroll retired at 7 :40 P.M. , and Mr. Paxton
appeared before the Board.
Mr. Paxton informed the Board that there was no
money left in the Sewer Services Account. He stated
Transfer that the Appropriation this year was $1500.00 and that
Sewer he has had about eighteen services. There are some
Services unpaid bills, and he will need about $300.00 for the
rest of the year.
Mr. Locke moved that the Appropriation Committee
be requested to transfer the sum of $300.00 from the
Reserve Fund to the Sewer Services Account . Mr. Potter
seconded the motion, and it was so voted.
Bids on Mr. Paxton informed the Board that he had received
Police bids, as follows, for making alterations in the Police
Depart. Department according to specifications prepared by the
Alterat 'ns Town Engineer : Bears & Roberts 1271.00; Walter C. Black
$355.00 and A. David Bjorkgren 381.00. The bid which
was previously submitted by Custance Bros . amounted to
$454.00. Mr. Paxton explained to the Board that these
bids do not include electric work or flooring.
It was decided to have Mr. Paxton find out just what
the shortage is in the regular Expense Account of the
Police Department, and to bring this information to the
Board next week.
The bids were held over until that time.
Mr. Paxton said that the men at the Public Works
Salaries Building were fairly well satisfied and have made no
complaints, but he wondered whether or not the Board
would consider giving the few remaining men an increase
of 5r/ per hour.
No action was taken on the matter.

A letter was received from Herman A. MacDonald,
Commissioner, Department of Public Works, relative to Snow
snow removal from State Highways . Removal
The Chairman requested Mr. Paxton to handle this
matter in the customary way.
Mr. Paxton retired at 7 :55 P.M.
A letter was received from James J. Carroll, Clerk, Registr'r:
Board of Registrars, referring to Chapter 453, Section Salaries
23 of the Acts of 1943 concerning registrars and assistant
registrars. According to this section both registrars
and assistant registrars shall receive such compensation
for their services as the Selectmen may determine.
It was decided to have Mr. Carroll submit his
recommendations to the Board.
A letter was received from Governor Saltonstall Civ.
requesting all Civilian Defense forces to maintain their Defense
organization and remain alert and in particular to see
that Warning Centers are constantly manned.
The Clerk was instructed to refer this letter to
the Committee on Public Safety.
Mr. John F. Daniels ' offer of $225.00 for Lots 24 Tax
and 25, Block 20, Bertwell Road, was considered by the Titer
Board. Offer
Mr. Locke moved that a proposal to sell the lots be
advertised in the Lexington Minute-man and that further
consideration be given the offer at the next meeting of
the Board. Mr. Sarano seconded the motion, and it was
so voted.
Mr Frank J. Pespisa's offer of $400.00 for Lots 26
to 31 inclusive, Block 22 on Dexter Road was discussed by Tax
the Board. Title
Mr. Locke moved that a proposal to sell the lots be Offer
advertised in the Lexington Minute-man and that further
consideration be given the offer at the next meeting of
the Board. Mr. Sarano seconded the motion, and it was so
voted.
No action was taken on the bids received last week Annual
for printing the Annual Report. The Board is still Report
considering the possibility of having an abbreviated form
of report published this year.
The meeting adjourned at 8:50 P.M.
