SELECTMEN'S MEETING
June 15, 1943
A regular meeting of the Board of Selectmen was held
in the Selectmen' s Room, Town Office Building on Tuesday evening,
June 15, 1943, at 8:30 P.M. The members were notified of the
meeting by the Chairman by telephone. Chairman Rowse, Messrs.
Sarano, Potter, Locke and Sheldon were present. The Clerk was
also present.
Mr. Paxton appeared before the Board at 8:40 P.M.
He said that the Lexington Lions Club had requested the
use of Cary Hall on October 21, 1943, from 7 :00 P.M. to
10:00 P.M. for a penny sale.
Mr. Potter moved that the use of the hall b e granted,
free of charge. Mr. Sheldon seconded the motion, and it was Uses of

Mr. Paxton said that the Lexington Grange had requested
the use of Cary Hall, September 25, 1943, from 2:00 P.M. to
10:00 P.M. for the annual fair.
Mr. Sheldon moved the use of the hall be granted subject
to the usual charge. Mr. Potter seconded the motion, and it
was so voted.
Mr. Paxton said that Mr. Norlin had requested the use of
Cary Hall for Graduation Exercises on June 22, 1943, from
10:00 A.M. to 12 :00 noon.
Mr. Potter moved that the use of the hall be ,granted,
free of charge. Mr. Sarano seconded the motion, and it was
so voted.
Mr. Paxton reported that he had talked with Lt. Brinker
Bedford from Grenier Field pertaining to the amount of money the U.
Air Base S. Army owes the Town of Lexington for water. The bill now
Water runs close to $1,000.00. He said that previous to the
Bill telephone conversation he had written a letter and had 3
requested payment for at least three month' s supply. Lt.
Brinker informed Mr. Paxton that it was impossible to make
any payment on the account as the contract has not been
signed by the Town and returned to the U. S. Army.
Mr. Paxton said that there were parts of the contract
which were not approved by Mr. Wrightington, but he did not
make any suggestions . Mr. Paxton said he telephoned.Mr. Gow
of the M.D.C. tosee if he could obtain permission to sign
the contract, but the Commission has not met and the tie-in
on Appleton Street, Arlington has not been completed.
Mr. Paxton said that he would obtain further information
and report to the Board at its next meeting.
Worthen- The Chairman read a letter from Robert C. Merriam Wort'ion-
Merriam stating that he purchased Mr. Worthen's Insurance Business h�erriam
as of May1, 1943, and he will payhim for it 90 of the Insurance ,
Insurance Contract
Contract brokerage commissions on the renewal of policies he wrote,
and which renewals are effective within three years after
May 1, 1943.

Upon motion of Mr. Potter, seconded by Mr. Locke, it
was voted to renew the fire and theft policy on equipment,
expiring on July 1, 1943, through the office of Robert C.
Merriam for a period of one year.
Mr. Paxton said that he had talked with Robert Fawcett
& Son and the Lexington Coal Company relative to coal bids . Coal
He said that both concerns, particularly the Lexington Coal
Company, feel that the coal situation is unsettled and will
not be straightened out for some time and the prices we would
receive at this time would have to be adjusted when the strike
was over. However, bids are to be submitted this Friday.
The matter was held over until the next meeting of the Held Over
Board.
Mr. Paxton called the Board's attention to the fact
that Mr. Viano had spoken to him about the possibility of Bicycle
having a bicycle rack in the center. He said that people Rack
do not like to leave their bicycles at the r ear of the
theater because they are not protected. He said that Mr.
Viano would probably write the Board on the subject.
The Chairman read a letter from the Appropriation
Committee advising that that Committee feels that cir_ Tractor
cumstances justify using the $5,000.00, originally planned
to purchase a truck, to acquire a tractor and they, therefore,
do not withhold approval.
Mr. Paxton retired at 8:55 P.M.
' A letter was received from the Appropriation Committee
advising that the sum of $38.79 had been t ransferred from Transfers
the Reserve Fund to the Buildingid Plumbing By-Laws--
Printing Account to pay for having Article 22 of the Building-
Laww printed and published.
The Appropriation Committee also advised that the sum
of $108.00 had been transferred from the Reserve Fund to the
Building •and Plumbing By-Laws Printing Account to provide for
printingti Building and Plumbing By-Laws in booklet form.
Mr. Sheldon moved that 500 copies of the Building By-Laws
of Lexington, at a cost of $75.00, and 500 copies of the
Plumbing By-Laws of Lexington, at a cost of $33.00 be
printed in booklet form. Mr. Sarano seconded the motion,
and it was so voted.
The Chairman read a letter from Mr. Garrity, Supt. of Playground
Parks & Playgrounds , submitting the name of Evelyn Hooper Personnel
as Supervisor, and Grace Hodgdon as Instructor at the Center
Playground.
Mr. Potter moved that Evelyn Hooper be approved as
Supervisor, and Grace Hodgdon approved as Instructor. Mr.
Sarano seconded the motion, and it was so voted

Mr. Garrity also recommended that the North Lexington
Playground be closed, due to the fact that there has been
no male applicant for the position.
Mr. Sarano moved that Mr. Garrity' s recommendation
be approved. Mr. Potter seconded the motion, and it was so
voted.
The Chairman read a letter from the Lexington War Price
Pleasure and Rationing Board stating that complaints had been received
Driving from citizens against so called "flagrant"'`violations of the
pleasure driving ban. The Rationing Board feels that requests
or instructions to the Police Department should come from the
Selectmen.
The Chairman said that he would call the matter to the
attention of the Police Department and also, send the police
a copy of the letter received from the Rationing Board.
A letter was received from Mr. Wrightington, together
Stevens with his bill in the amount of 50.00 for services in the case
Barry of Frederic R. Stevens against George C. Barry of the Police
Case Department. Mr. Wrightington wrote that the Selectmen voted
on September 28, 1937, to instruct him to defend the action.
The case has been in order for trial for a long time but has
Wrighting- never been marked for trial by the plaintiff and Mr. Wright-
ton Bill ington finally arranged to have it disposed off.
Mr. Potter moved that the bill be approved for payment
and charged to the Law Department--Expenses Account. Mr.
Locke seconded the motion, and it was so voted.
A letter was received from Charles C. Paul, 20 Taft
Building Avenue, Lexington, stating that several months ago the
Complaint interior of a house on Sylvia Street was completely burned
out. He said this was converted into a two-family house and
has been left standing in this condition ever sinee. Mr.
Paul wrote that it appears to be an exceedingly bad fire hazard
and since it is a very old building, unsafe to leave standing.
Mr. Potter moved that the matter be referred to the
Building Inspector for investigation and report. Mr. Sarano
seconded the motion, and it was so voted.
The Chairman read a letter from the Lexington Rotary
Recreation Club advising that that organization felt the need of whole-
Sunday some recreation for young people on Sunday afternoon. The
Afternoon Club suggested that a Committee to study the matter be ap-
pointed by the Board of Selectmen.
Mr. Potter moved that no action be taken on the matter,
and that the Chairman write to the Rotary Club advising that
the Board of Selectmen does not believe there is any serious
problem at this time. Mr. Locke seconded the motion, and it
was so voted.

The deed for the sale of Lot 16, Mock 17, Reed
II Street, Lexington, was received from Mr. Wrightington.
Upon motion of Mr. Sarano, seconded by Mr. Sheldon,
it was voted to sign the deed.
The deed for the sale of Lots 16 & 17, Block 15,
(Meagher) Earle Street, Lexington, to Henry J. and
Hazel E. Travers of 40 Earle Street was received from
Mr. Wrightington.
Mr. Potter moved that the deed be signed. Mr.
Locke seconded the motion, and it was so voted.
Upon motion of Mr. Locke, seconded by Mr. Sheldon,
it was voted to grant the following licenses :

Mr. Sheldon informed the Board that he had talked with
Mr. Cann relative to the problem of his car operation expenses .
Cann car After some discussion on the matter, the Chairmans aid that
Allowance Mr. Cann had been advised that as soon as the Building business
started up agains his request for increased automobile allowance
would be reconsidered.
Mr. Sheldon said he wanted to be recorded in opposition
of no action being taken on the matter.
The Chairman discussed positions now held by Mr. Lamont .
He wondered whether or not Health work could be combined with
Mr. the Sealer's work. After some discussion on the matter, it
Lamont's was decided to have Mr. Sheldon contact Mr. Lamont and Obtain
[ Positions information as to the number of inspections, mileage, and
the possibility of combining the jobs.
Mr. Sheldon agreed to obtain the facts and report at
the next meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 9:35 P.M.
