HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018-04-27-BOWMAN-min Bowman Site-Based Council Friday, April 27, 2018 Present: Mary Anton, Rosanne Barbacano, Kavita Ravi, Seth Moeller, Alison Stevens, Lauren Avery, Kathy Caron, Melinda Webster Loof, Beth Glick Called to order at 7:50 by Seth Moeller and seconded by Kavita Ravi. March 23rd meeting minutes unanimously approved with a motion by Kavita Ravi and seconded by Seth Moeller at 7:58. Minutes recorded by: Beth Glick I. Announcements ❖ Parent math night was very successful ❖ Will be scheduling media night with Detective Hankins for 3-5 parents ❖ Passport To The World ongoing updates including student contributions ❖ Working on increasing sign ups for food, booths and performances ❖ Mary Anton and Beth Glick will be meeting with PTA to discuss ongoing events ❖ Placement updates Bowman will remain at 26 classrooms with 4th and 5th grade having 5 sections. All other grade levels remain at 4 sections. ❖ METCO students are in the process of being screened. A large number of siblings this coming school year. ❖ Big screen TV ordered for the lobby ❖ There will be a new playground. ❖ Sean Newell met with PTA to lay out the plans for the playground. Who will be on the committee to be discussed. ❖ Mary Anton also had a meeting with Sean Newell about the playground over vacation. II. Public Comment ❖ Comment by Kavita Ravi sharing that whatever was done for 4th/5th grade students for Social Media was very informative. Appreciated Detective Hankins presentation. Would like to see this continuing in coming years. ❖ Variety show- Was great. Fifth Graders were able to MC. III. Principal Search/Principal Transition ❖ Search reopened and one big committee. ❖ Representatives from each school. Principal interviews to begin next Thursday. ❖ Bowman Site finalist visit for candidates May 14th beginning in the morning. IV. School Improvement Plan ❖ Discussion of School Improvement Plan end of year results and next year's School Improvement Plan ❖ 3D printer is ongoing ❖ Working to move beyond only a Dismantling Racism time and integrating more throughout the curriculum. ❖ Working with Alex Kuschel, K-5 Social Studies Curriculum Coordinator. ❖ How to embed the Dismantling Racism Curriculum across the LPS curriculum. ❖ Draft School Improvement Plan has been submitted to the Superintendent. V. English Language Learners - Katie Gerlich ELL teacher ❖ ELL population is pretty consistently 15% ❖ Wide variety of home languages and countries represented ❖ Program model - hybrid pull out and push in ❖ Grade level groups 4 times per week for 45 minutes pull out - content related to the classroom to give hands on experiences and reinforce the academic language they will need in the classroom. ❖ Presently 84 students in ELL ❖ Size of groups range from as small as 4-5 and as large as 16-20 depending on the year and grade level. ❖ Larger groups are co-taught. ❖ ELL blocks are designated for each grade level to allow for scheduling ❖ 3 full time ELL teachers ❖ When newcomers come, Katie Gerlich shared about what teaching and support is provided as students transition and learn the language and concepts through the use of visuals. Motion to adjourn by Alison Stevens and seconded by Lauren Avery at 8:52 Unanimously approved by all members.
