LEXINGTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING
Saturday, January 23, 2010
Clarke Middle School
17 Stedman Road
Present: Superintendent Paul Ash, School Committee Chair Margaret Coppe,
School Committee Members Rod Cole, Tom Diaz and Mary Ann Stewart.
The minutes were taken by Leora Tec.
The meeting was convened at 4:38 p.m.
I. Call to Order and Welcome (Margaret Coppe)
II. Discussion Item
1. Public Hearing on the budget.
Julie Fouhy (speech and language pathologist at LHS): Members of the Speech
and Language Department have attended today to explain what cutting a speech
and language position would mean. She also asked questions regarding the reasons
behind the proposed cut.
Debbie McCanne (speech pathologist at LHS): Explained why the rosters and
caseloads are as they are for speech and language pathologists.
Mary Ellen Leelman (speech and language pathologist at Bowman and
Lexington parent): I understand wanting to be fiscally responsible. We are
building data teams. We want to know what you would need to analyze to work
load vs. caseload. It is not enough to just look at numbers.
There were comments from the School Committee and Dr. Ash.
The speakers were advised to bring any information they gather to the Committee
before the February 9 meeting.
There was further discussion of the budget among Committee members and Dr.
Ash including a brief discussion on town demographics.
III. Motion to adjourn (Diaz, Stewart). The motion passed 5-0.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:35 p.m.
