HomeMy WebLinkAbout2009-11-17-SC-min SC Meeting 11/17/09 page # 1 LEXINGTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING Tuesday, November 17, 2009 Global Ministries Church 670 Washington Street Dorchester, MA Present: Superintendent Paul Ash, School Committee Chair Margaret Coppe, School Committee Members Rod Cole, Tom Diaz, Jessie Steigerwald and Mary Ann Stewart, and student representative Liam Gandelsman. The minutes were taken by Margaret Coppe. The meeting was convened at 7:30 p.m. I. Call to Order and Welcome (Margaret Coppe) II. Public Comment Will Huff (co-president of the Lexington METCO Parents Association): Mr. Huff presented four questions from the audience: 1. Does the future of the METCO program depend on closing the achievement gap? Superintendent Paul Ash answered that it did not. 2. During the proposed facilities plan, where will students be going? 3. What is the status of hiring a permanent METCO director? 4. Where can the Boston parents assist in increasing diversity in Lexington? III. Discussion Items 1. Update from Equity and Excellence Committee. Presented by Vito LaMura, Co- Chair of the Excellence and Equity Committee. 2. Update on METCO Director Search. Dr. Ash addressed this in response to a question during Public Comment. The position will be advertised in the spring and he hopes to hire a permanent director for FY 11. IV. Motion to adjourn (Diaz, Stewart). The motion passed 5-0. The Committee adjourned at 8:10 PM. SC Meeting 11/17/09 page # 2 After the close of the formal meeting attendees were invited to attend Break-Out Sessions with individual school principals, Vito LaMura, George Saxon, interim METCO Director and Carol Pilarski Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Professional Development.
