LEXINGTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING
Monday, April 14, 2008

Present: Superintendent Paul Ash, School Committee Chair Tom Diaz, School Committee
Members Rod Cole and Margaret Coppe. The minutes were taken by Leora Tec.
I. Call to Order and Welcome (Tom Diaz)
II. Public Comment
Phyllis Neufeld (president of LEA): I am here to urge you to facilitate a fair and equitable
contract with our Instructional Assistant’s Union.
Dr. Ash would also like a fair and equitable solution. The issue will be going to mediation.
Members of the public expressed opinions for and against the new diversity curriculum.
III. Superintendent’s Announcements
1. Update on Clarke Middle School Pedestrian Bridge
Dr. Flynn gave an update on the bridge. By late May the kids will be able to use the
bridge.
2. Final Day of school for students is June 17, which is a half day.
IV. Discussion Items
1. Pilot of Secondary School Student Intervention Program
The first program aimed at closing the achievement gap was presented by Vito La Mura.
This would involve hiring substitute teachers to free up other teachers in order to give
intensive academic support to students who need it.
There were questions and discussion from the Committee.
Motion to approve the program described by Mr. La Mura (Cole, Coppe). The
motion passed 3-0.

V. Action Items
1. Vote to Establish a Revolving Fund for Kindergarten
Motion to approve the establishment of a revolving fund for kindergarten (Coppe,
Cole). The motion passed 3-0.
3. Vote to Approve School Committee Minutes of February 4, 2008
4. Vote to Approve School Committee Minutes of March 24, 2008 (Amend to read: “Motion
to support the motion under Article 8” (delete “revolving funds”).
5. Vote to Approve School Committee Minutes of March 26, 2008
Motion to accept minutes of Feb 4, March 24th as amended and March 26 (Coppe,
Cole). The motion passed 3-0.
6. Vote to Accept $866.00 Donation to the Bridge School Gift Account
Motion to gratefully accept $866.00 donation to the Bridge School gift account (Cole,
Coppe). The motion passed 3-0.
VI. Motion to recess and reconvene at the chair’s request on the floor of Town Meeting
(Cole, Coppe). The motion passed 3-0.
