HomeMy WebLinkAbout2528 Report, the minority report of the Committee on the Fire Department, no date but presumed 1874Differing materials from the majority of the
committee in regard to a better system for extinguishing
fires, I deem it my duty to the Town to make
the following report.
There is at present owned by the
Town two Fire Engines in good condition, connected with
which are two organised companies of about forty men
each who do fire duty for a small compensation annually,
and who have in numerous instances proved their efficiency
in case of fire. I think it would be an unwise policy on
the part of the Town to disband these companies, thereby
rendering the Engines useless in case of fire, and depend
altogether on the proposed Chemical Engines, which however
Servicable if on the ground when a fire is first discovered, are
conceded by all to be of little use in case of a fire of any
magnitude, or when a fire gains headway before being
discovered. I would therefore recommend that no change be
made in the present Fire Department. [Crossed out text: I would also recommend
that not less than six reservoirs be constructed under the
direction of the Engineers of such places as they may
deem necessary, to protect property in case of fire, and
that money may be granted for that purpose.]
Art. 7 & 8, Num. 6.
In regard to the Engine House in East Lexington,
I would report that the House now used as such, is old
and unsafe, and wholly unfit for the purpose for which
it is used. I would recommend that the House and land
upon which it stands be sold, and that the property now
owned by the Catholic Society be purchased, said property
now being for sale for the sum of $2250.00. The lower part
of the building will give ample room for an Engine
House, and also room for a Hook & Ladder carriage or any
other apparatus appertaining to the fire department, should
such be required in the future, and also a room for
meetings of the company, having a large Hall overhead
which would supply a want long felt in that part of the
Town, the Hall to be under the direction of the Selectmen and
could be let for Lectures, Assemblies &c. I would therefore
recommend that the Selectmen be authorised to purchase said
property and make such alterations or improvements as
they may deem necessary - and that the sum of $3500.00
be appropriated therefore.
All of which is respectfully submitted.
Henry A. Wellington.
