HomeMy WebLinkAbout2257 Report of committee on building a schoolhouse in the North District, no date, presumed 1850To all People to whom these Presents shall come Greeting Know ye that I John Tidd of Lexington in the County of Middlesex & Commonwealth of Massachusetts Yeman, do Covenant & agree for myself my heirs Exec'rs & Admin'trs and assigns that the Inhabitants of Lexington shall have good & lawful right to occupy[?] and improve a certain piece of ground for and during my Natural life for a Public School house, said piece of ground is the same in which the Schoolhouse now stands also said Inhabitants shall have free liberty to enter on my land around said School house to repair the same if inceation [?] requires it. In Lexington where of the Inhabitants are to pay unto the said John Tidd ten Dollars for said right of Improvement. The Town of Lexington to Nathaniel Harrington Dr Sept 29th 1827 for half a day work laying brick &c in the middle schoolhouse $0=83 Hyde three fourths of a day patching plastering &c 0:75 for fifty seven bricks 0=40 [total] 1:98 Lexington Dec 17th 1927 Receivd payment The Selectmen having viewed the Schoolhouse in the Southeast east district are of opinion that the same is worth repairing. The committee believe that land can be bought near the centre of the district for a reasonable price. Voted to ecommit the subject with instructions to purchase land to place the Schoolhouse upon if they judge best, and to re- move the old house or build a new one. Voted to add to the former committee two from said district. Messrs Phinehas Lawrence and Ambrose Morell were chosen - A true copy of Records - Brook 6 Page 150 Attest Nathaniel Mulliken Town Clk Lexington Sept 3 1827 Agreement to build 2 Schoolhouses Centre for 464 Scotland 425 [total] 889 Posts 11 feet & 10 for Scotland 13 pair rafters 3 by 5 supported by purline [purlin] plates 6 cross sills 10 by 8 5 beams 8 square timber ridge plates 7 inches by 8 posts 8 inches Studs not less than 4 inches square 2098 visits to the schools from the parents and guardians of children are encouraging, both to Teacher & pupils. They show that you think, going to school is of im- portance. We would suggest it as a good plan for the families in each district to adopt regular turns, (not in a ten[?] thousand [illegible]) are visiting their schools - Let a portion of each family as often as once a month spend an hour, if no more, in listening to the recitations of their children - they could not spend the hour, more either profitably or pleasantly if they would only give the subject the serious consideration it deserves. Attention has justly been turned of late to the locality, construction & internal arrangements of our school houses, and when we are consider how much the health, comfort & refinement of the scholar depends upon the character of the building where he received his instructions we are amazed that such house as have been [illegible] thought this commonwealth, could have been tolerated. It would now puzzle the ingenu- ity of the most skilfull architect to devise any thing more entirely unadapted for the purpose for which they were constructed. In Prussia there are some state regulations upon this subject which it would be well for us to voluntarily initiate. There the School houses are required whole number of scholars was 55 - average attendance 41 - Wages of teacher per month 18 dollars Primary department of this school was taught by Miss Ellen E Harrington - length of school 14 weeks - whole number of schollars was 45 - average attendance 39 - Wages of teacher per month 13 dollars Winter term of this school was taught by Mr. J. Wellington Hobbs - Length of school 14 weeks. Whole number of schollars 65. Aver age attendance 47. Wages of teacher per month 40 dollars Primary department of this school was taught by Miss Mary E Fiske, length of school was 13 weeks. Whole number of scholars was 58. Average attendance 37 Wages of teacher per month 16 dollars. Norh East District The summer term of this school was in charge of Miss Sara A Fitz. Length of school was 5 months. Whole number of scholars 31. Average attendance 20. Wages of teacher 15 dollars per month. Winter term of this school was taught by Mr. Otis Cutler. Length of school was 3 3/4 month Whole number of schollars was 45. Average attendance 32. Wages of teacher per month 38 dollars The Committee chosen by the Town at March Meeting 1844 to take into consideration the importance of having two annual Schools kept in the two Village School Houses for the benefit of all the Children of the Town, of the age of Ten years in the Summer Season, and Twelve years in the Winter Season Unanimously Report that following plan for the Consideration of the Two; Viz. That the town Grant the Sum of seven hundred dollars in addition to the sum already granted for Public Schools; and your Committee are of Opinion that said sum would be adequate for the support of two yearly schools for all the Children of the Town of the age above stated. Said Schools to be under the Supervision of the General School Committee of the Town. Each School District to receive from the sum already appropriated for Public Schools, in the same proportion as heretofore For behalf of the Committee John Mulliken Chairman Lexington April 18th 1844 To all People to whom these Presents Shall Come Greeting Know ye that I Amos Marrett of Lexington in the County of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts Yeoman, For divers causes and considerations hereunto moving do Covenant &c agree for myself my heirs Executors & Administrators and Assigns, that the Inhabitants of the Town of Lexington Shall have good and Lawful right to occupy and improve a Certain piece of my Land for a Public School-house, for the term of Eight years from the day and date of these presents, also said Inhabitants Shall have free liberty to enter on my land around said School house to repair the same if conditions[?] requires it - it is to be further understood that said piece of Land is the same on which the School house now stands.
