4.10.25
1. Meeting called to order at 7:30 AM. Present: Nancy Sofen, Gavin Grant, Barbara
Tarrh, Gerry Paul, Pat Moyer(co-chair and minutes), Rachel Noack Summers, Mark
Connor, co-chair,Alicia Morris, Joe Pato, Ben Fein-Cole, applicant to committee
2. Minutes of February and March were approved.
3. Dave P. was unable to be present but answered our questions. No news yet on the
Urban Forest Master Plan Grant. Dave sent the locations of last fall planting,
attached.Arbor Day is Friday,April 25, and we are welcome to send a presence.
Dave sent a list of hazard trees cut down, also appended. He brought us up to date
on the 250 trees for the 250th;just about all that we need he has ordered and has
already arrived (trees to come week of 4/29.)
4. We welcomed Ben Fein-Cole, applicant for associate membership. He introduced
himself and let us know about his experience. His name-will go before the Select
Board for approval soon. Pat has already met with him to discuss what we do.
5. Barbara, Gavin, and Nancy will attend the Arbor Day ceremony. Three memorial
trees to be planted. Russ Morash and Roger Cook, associated with both Lexington
and the This Cold House PBS series, along with recently departed members of the
Garden Club will be remembered during the ceremony.
6. Barbara and Gavin updated us on spring planting plans. This year Joel Custance
and Chris Filadoro chose the species. Wagon Wheel will be supplying and planting
the trees. A 3-year contract with Wagon Wheel was signed by the town. Trees will
be bare root about 1 3/a inches DBH. DPW would welcome planting site
suggestions. Barbara and Gavin again suggested the use of jotform; there was
interest by the department, possible implementation in the fall. Should we help to
implement? memorial tree planting program.
7. Gavin updated us on the plans for 2 elementary school 5th grade graduation tree
giveaways. He and Dave have arranged for 4 species in 1 gallon pots to be available
for those graduations.
8. We discussed our plans for the 250 tree giveaway. We hope to have LHS'ers for the
fence-cutting and for the actual tree distribution days 5/3 and 5/10.
We thought some feedback from tree-receiving households might be great—
including some pictures. We brainstormed about how to encourage this, and where
to place pictures etc. No conclusions drawn.
9. Discovery Day. (Saturday, May 24).What information should we have? Thoughts:
not cutting trees down, dispelling tree myths; discussion of`why trees?', explanation
of what the TC does; talk about why preserving large trees matters. Nancy, Barbara
and Pat will form a subcommittee to discuss.
10.Sustainability Fair 3/22, our tabling went well. There was steady interest. 4 people
signed up to get street or setback trees; Barbara to relay them to DPW.
11.We discussed Article 2 set in front of special Town Meeting. The area allocated last
year to the MBTA Communities Act by-right residential development was reduced
from over 200 acres to about 90 acres.
12.The 69 Pleasant St. development. Barbara Katzenback, from the neighborhood
above the development i i if she could convince the developer to plant some
of the tree replacements mandated by the Tree Bylaw on some park land owned by
her neighborhood. We discussed. We told her that changes in the landscape plan
would have to be approved by the Planning Board. The Tree Bylaw was not waived
for this development. We saw no issue with her talking with the developer.
13. Rachel brought us up to date on her pocket forest plans. She met in March with the
Recreation Department, at Dave P's suggestion. She presented them with a power-
point of the pocket forest idea and benefits. She was referred to the Lincoln Park
subcommittee. Dave P seems to favor trying it. This will not occur this year, likely.
Tree hearing on Cedar St. sidewalk plans discussed. Nancy drafted and presented a
plan from this committee to save a 40 inch oak. Ross Morrow from the Town
Engineering Dept, responsible for sidewalk development, along with others from his
staff, Chris Filadoro, Tree Warden, several Tree Committee members, and a group of
neighbors were present-at the tree hearing on March 28. Given neighbor objections
to removal of the oak, Ross was able to develop a plan to narrow the street near the
tree in order to preserve it. The Tree Committee has requested that an arborist be
present for any necessary root pruning.
15. Meeting adjourned at 9:18 AM.
