Opening Day -Focus for our work this
year..PARTNERSHIP- Community Circles,
SEL Curriculum
• MCAS Overview- Spring Results for
2025 at Harrington
• Review of the purpose of the Site Council
team and our impact on the School Innovation
Plan
• We always try to align our goals with the other
elementary schools in the district, in particular
with curricular goals
• Each year, we aim to focus on a strategic goal
to work toward as a school
• Ms. Daley shared a slide deck to review our
goals at Harrington that focus on partnership,
community circles, and a new SEL curriculum
• When we look at the strategic plan, we look at
the overarching trending theme/goal, and that
is the disproportionality of academic
achievement as it relates to black/brown
students
• Relationships are a critical factor, and the hope
that with more a focus placed on that,
students will feel better about school in
general, and ultimately perform better
• Restorative Justice is an approach that has
gained great traction in the last several years;
Ms. Daley, Dr. O'Connor and several other staff
members have been formally trained at the
Tier 1 level
• We are not necessarily seeking to train all
staff, but we are actively working to integrate
the concept of community circles within
classrooms
o The overall concept with the approach
is bring students together in a circle,
use a talking piece, and establish
common ground (especially when a
conflict has arisen)
• The goal is also to expand the concept across
the school community as a whole
• Restorative practices were defined to help
understand what they mean in general as it
relates to forging positive relationships with
students
• Ms. Colagiovanni spoke about her morning
meeting with second graders where every
student understands that only one person is
allowed to speak at one time
o She then spoke about a disagreement
at recess where students were upset
about a game and students shared
some problem solving ideas in a circle,
and because they were used to the
format, it was easier to start and finish
• Ms. Class said that practicing with low -stakes
questions is a great way to build the routines,
then transitioning to deeper questioning; it is
really good to get into that routine and revert
back to class norms so that if
• Ms. Scafidi discussed sharing each morning,
and students use an object to pass which
signifies that person is able to speak; we have
not gotten to a place where deeper issues
have arisen and I feel confident using the
approach
• Members commend staff for taking on this
work - multiyear, multigenerational issues;
What does success look like in the short term?
o Discipline is something we document
and can track, so we could see shifts
and changes overtime
o It is difficult to say if Circle work is
directly related to any changes
o Looking at Student Growth Percentiles
for academic changes
• There are several students that have been
identified that are very close to meeting
expectations on MCAS
• Discussion about the integration of training by
Kurt Faustin that was secured through the
METCO department; Harrington is one of the
three LPS elementary schools where students
who belong the METCO program attend
school
• Ms. Grant commended that it is extraordinary
that we are doing this work as a work, and
that this was not the way school handled
things when she attended at the elementary
level
• Ms. Daley explained the Second Step SEL
curriculum. Every teacher has access to online
lessons as a teaching tool (how to be a good
friend, how to solve conflict, etc.)
o Ms. Grant wondered if there was a way
to measure the efficacy of the
program? Ms. Daley commented that
we do review VOCAL student survey
data when they complete data
• Screeners were reviewed as well as academic
performance that identify areas for growth
• Resources were shared with the group on how
to best support our efforts
• Ms. Levy commented that this work is
tremendous as it relates to our approach of
restorative justice
New business:
• Next meeting to discuss possible ways to
measure our outcomes
Next Meeting: November 14th
• Motion to approve by Ms. Daley at 9:33,
seconded Dr. O'Connor and approved 7-0
