Progress on the Minuteman
Bikeway
• On September 11 , 1987 a meeting of the state level
Minuteman Bikeway Committee was held in the Transportation
Building in Boston. This was our first meeting with the
representatives of Vollmer Associates, the consultants who
were chosen as contractors for the design of the commuter
bikeway. The meeting took place one year after Secretary
Salvucci had announced approval of state funding for the
project and seven months after the DPW Bikeway Committee had
picked Vollmer as the successful bidder.
One of the pieces of new information .that we received
was that the consultant expected to take one year to complete
the design i. e. to August 1988. This was much longer than any
time period for the design phase that had previously been
discussed. In response to my protest over the implied loss of
the 1988 construction season, the consultant agreed that the
design preparation might be speeded up enough to allow some of
the construction work to begin in the fall of 1988.
I enclose a copy of the minutes of the September 11
meeting as recorded by the consultant. The state level
Bikeway Committee plans to meet at 4 week intervals from now
on to keep the project moving as rapidly as possible. Among
the design issues to be resolved are those owvidth of the
paved striplandscaping, ` access gates, handicap cEess and
rcfencing. We expect td schedule an information meeting with the
consultants in Lexington in mid-November for our Bikeway
Committee and all other interested citizens.
