HomeMy WebLinkAbout2017-03-28-SLC-min Town of Lexington Sustainable Lexington Committee Minutes of Meeting of March 28, 2017 A meeting of the Sustainable Lexington Committee (SLC)was held on March 28, 2017 at the Town Office Building. A quorum of four was present. Members Present: Mark Sandeen, Marcia Gens, Todd Rhodes, Rick Reibstein Members Absent: Dan Voss Other Attendees: None The meeting was called to order at 7:10 pm. Community Choice Aggregation (M. Sandeen) • Residents are receiving mailings from companies selling electricity from renewable resources. The committee discussed whether to communicate to residents ahead of the release of the Community Choice option, but decided not to do any communications ahead of the release of the Community Choice option and to rely on the planned communications. Electicity Utilities (M. Sandeen) • Mark discussed the changes to how Eversource is charging for Energy Conservation measures and the structure of the Eversource business model, which results in higher rates than other states or Municipal energy companies in the state. • The changes will have a negative impact of efforts to improve energy efficiency. • The committee discussed how to address this challenge, including communicating with Mike Barrett. Getting to Net Zero (M. Sandeen) • The first meeting of the task force was held today. • The representative from Shire was encouraging the team to do more. • Peregrine Energy staff identified that there are approaches that they can use to include commercial businesses into Community Choice. • Warrant Article is being presented on April 3 for get appropriations . Lexington Energy Challenge (T. Rhodes) • Planning meeting on April 12th • Planning hold tabling events at Discovery Day and Hazardous Waste Collection Days. Hartwell Solar Facility(M. Sandeen) • Planning a ribbon cutting on April 19th. • Inviting Jay Kauffman and . NGrid (M. Sandeen) Page 1 of 2 • NGrid will be initiating their program to resolve gas leaks on April 3. Meeting with Public Health (R. Reibstein) • Met with Gerry Cody at Public Health about the importance of indoor air quality at Town schools. • A staff member at Public Health will help to define toxics use rules for the town. Meeting with Permanent Buildings Commission (M. Sandeen) • A meeting was held at the DPW building with the Board of Selectmen, School Committee, Permanent Buildings Committee, and the Sustainable Lexington Committee. • The PBC was challenging the economics of the all-electric decision for Hastings based on an analysis that considered a best-case scenario for natural gas and a worst- case scenario for electricity. Mark Sandeen presented a counter argument. • The Board of Selectmen and School Committee agreed to continue to support the all- electric solution. Page 2 of 2
