Minutes, Meeting of January 18, 2018
Attendees: John Frey (Chairman), Gerry Paul, Jewel Kuljian, Nancy Sofen, Jim and Chris
Filadoro (Tree Warden)
Gerry Paul took his turn as scribe.
Minutes of the December 14 meeting were approved.
Town Engineer John Livsey and a member of his staff updated the committee on a project to
repair the earthen dam at the Old Res. Unfortunately, this will involve removing all trees on the
dam itself. New trees will be planted in close proximity but not on the dam. Engineering will
consult with us on tree species for the trees to be planted.
Tree inventory -While multiple vendors responded with questions, Chris has received only 1
quote (from Davey Tree). He ask Bartlett for a quote.
Bylaw activity- no update.
Tree Species recommendations - Nancy presented recommended lists of trees for street and
setback planting. The committee voted to approve the lists as guidelines for Chris (without any
ALB susceptible species for now- we will discuss further at our next meeting). Nancy will check
if the "Large Shade Tree" list used for double credit by contractors is a superset of the large
shade tree list for use by Chris.
Tree Management Manual update - will be discussed at next month's meeting.
2017 Tree Planting - Chris confirmed that the will require a mitigation fee for trees removed at
29 Eliot Rd since the Dawn Redwood which was supposed to be spared was, in fact, removed.
Chris will provide a list locations and species of all trees planted as part of the fall 2017
planting.
Mass Ave Sidewalk reconstruction - Gerry presented new information about the actual right-of-
way as researched by Town Engineering. The committee will invite Erik G. and Marc V. for
discussion at our next meeting.
New TC member search - We voted to recommend Pat Moyer for appointment to the Tree
Committee. John will notify the Selectmen's office.
Tree Committee website update - not discussed.
Amend Tree Bylaw to address dense housing developments - no new information
Striped Maple replacement in Nell Walker's grove - Chris reported that Matt Foti can source the
tree and it will be planted in the Spring.
Amend Tree Bylaw to address dense housing developments - Gerry will schedule a meeting
with Aaron Henry, Town Planning Director and will notify members of the time/place.
