MEETING NOTES dAl' WIIIIIIHTIIII..II'4 • Rosemary-We're not there yet but we know there is a desire for reusables • Matt added that space summary does have additional space for dishwashing for students reusables • Lin -Wants to mention that there is room budgeted for drink and milk fountains—no more single serve drink bottles in the future Tina McBride: Agrees with Lin.Adds that installing all of these things will end up being cost saving measures as the state has to deal with how we manage our waste. • EPE 33-34: the idea of curving shapes might make sense for some reasons, but it could be problematic for travel time.A more rectangular space with open courtyard in middle that allows multiple points between areas of the building. Centralizes a lot of potential gathering spaces • EPE 45: idea of movable walls does allow more creativity in terms of the space we currently have. Can transform spaces within our current building with movablewalls. Cindy Arens:Thanks Lin for talking about food waste.Wants to make clear that reducing waste is part of IDP. Zero waste design is an expectation. Anywhere there will be a sink and a refrigerator must have dishwasher. Lorraine—need to dive into as plans develop. Ned to look at what that means, where they are, what the implications are. We need to visit that at each area. Dave Wininger: Can't find recommendations on website Exterior and Interior Design Recommendations for Further Discussion EID 5: Exploring vertical vs. horizontal future expansion EID 9:Waste reduction/reusables/dishwashing in food service areas &teacher lounge spaces EID 12-13: Consider environmental impact and insulation value of materials/envelope EID 14: Using mass timber to reduce embodied carbon EID 15: Be creative with where we put solar panels EID 16: Balance design goals with energy constraints EID 18: Balance open campus with security EID 22-24: Separate parking and building access for athletics, performing arts, students and teachers EID 33: Need for functional auditorium appropriate for programs that utilize space EID 34: Orchestra pit is highly desirable EID 38: Separate entrances for athletics and performing arts far away from each other EID 42: Provide food-appropriate spaces where students can study EID 45: Experienced problems with linoleum in the past (welded seams in particular) Focus Group Comments: MEETING NOTES dAl' WIIIIIIHTIIII..II'4 Dave Wininger: Read full recommendations on website o Are fume hoods for science classrooms part of design consideration? Phil: there will be fume hoods in the school. Will be a conversation with science department. o At present we have hearing impaired classrooms around campus. No mention about hearing impaired classrooms. Is every classroom designed to accommodate? Rosemary: Yes all classrooms are outfitted with voice amplification systems. Phil: inherent in our design, background noise level will be significantly lower than existing. Vincent LeRow: • EID 15: can consider solar panels over bleachers at athletic fields which could provide shade • Matt: we do think its achievable to generate enough energy to power building Rachel Jayson:Wild and alarming to hear that renovation is under consideration for auditorium. Why is it still being considered for auditorium? • Brian: Options have been narrowed and only renovation option we have carried forward builds and new auditorium. • Rachel: no performing arts wing right now? In a redesign want to center rooms near auditorium so that there will be a performing arts wing. Site,Safety&Security Recommendations for Further Discussion SSS 1-2: Need to balance open campus culture with security SSS 3-10: Creating an enclosed outdoor space that provides access to nature and safety SSS 11:There is not a common understanding of the term "open campus" SSS 33-34: Create dedicated carpool areas rather than limiting parking to reduce single occupancy vehicles SSS 35: Use nearby town owned parking lots for student parking SSS 37: Need to consider future parking and vehicular needs of the town SSS 39: Need to consider off-site parking options for peak uses SSS 42: Would like to incorporate green roof spaces SSS 47-48:Take advantage of school bus batteries to powerschool SSS 56: Focus forward about how transportation is evolving SSS 60-63: Explore more stories to minimize building footprint and preserve ground space SSS 64: Maximizing parking doesn't reflect needs of the community to minimize single occupancy vehicle SSS 75-76: Parking design should account for how parking is used during recreation and park use SSS 80: Designing convenient parking will incentivize driving MEETING NOTES dAl' WIIIIIIIRTIIII..II'4 SSS 84: Model land stewardship SSS 87: Explore opportunities to create a more holistic wetland SSS 100: Consider shelter in place locations for students with mobility issues SSS 105: Separation of nurse's area for medical emergencies Focus Group Comments: Dave Wininger: Open campus to staff and students means that Juniors and Seniors can leave campus when they don't have class. Could be caused by insufficient staffing and space. Susan Barret: When would it make sense to have a separate transportation working group? • Lorraine:We need to understand circulation of 5 new options first. Discussion will happen in latter part of PSR. September. o Susan: have had recommendations made that are relevant to a new high school • Lorraine: share those ASAP Cindy Arens: Suggest that we don't use the term open campus at all.Talk about design as spaces where student scan have outdoor learning/socializing/eating. o Cindy: wants to ask where she can find 5 options. On home screen post form Julie Hackett SBC meeting minutes on website Mark Sandeen: reflect on conversation about electric school buses o Wants to make sure we are considering electrics school bus/van ready • By 2035 those will be the only vehicles we'll be able to buy Chris Bouchard: Open campus in school handbook is juniors and seniors in a certain standing are allowed to leave campus if they have a free period of time.Ties into security. Line Jensen: What's preserved in B1 option? Field house, Science and Math buildings o Appreciates that green engineer company is a consultant • How flexible are we with how much of the old building we keep? Could it be reduced/expanded? Not locked into massing. Could increase or decrease. MEPS Systems&Sustainable Design Recommendations for Further Discussion MEPS 2:Think about the future ahead of time MEPS 6: Consider emerging technology MEPS 22-23: Combine spaces that aren't occupied at the same time to reduce energy use MEPS 26-32: Conduct a Lifecycle Cost Analysis early on (75 -year LCCA for discussion) MEPS 51: Strive for net positive MEP 54-59: Potential for bus batteries to increase resilience MEPS 63-65: Plan for bicycle charging stations MEPS 78: 24/7 HVAC and humidity control MEPS 87: Supplemental backup for HVAC MEPS 91:Theatre spaces to have larger supply of electricity than other high schools MEETING NOTES dAl' WIIIIIIIRTIIII..II'4 MEPS 94: Refrigerant management for ASHP— looking at long-term impacts MEPS 95: Consider heat pump maintenance on cold days MEPS 101-104: Health, air quality ad ventilation takes precedent over energy efficiency MEPS 106: Goal of 600 PPM CO2 sensors MEPS 122:Task consultants to explore beyond business-as-usual solutions Focus Group Comments: Mark Sandeen: Are we including federal state utility incentives in LCCA?We do it without incentives and add incentives as line item. Part of it but not fully included. • Mark Sandeen: Suggests a conversation about that. Important to look at it in an integrated fashion • Martine: MSBA doesn't want incentives included and add a line item Cindy Arens: operational costs and ongoing programs should be included in LCCA o Solar and battery storage will reduce operational costs 0 5 minute defrost cycle will not affect temperature of building. Highly insulated building envelope. Martine: Peak savings from PV will be integrated in LCCA Dave Wininger: Does it matter if recommendations related to sustainability are brought up in other focus groups? All recommendations are moved forward by SBC.
