RE EMERY PARK PLANS, BIGELOW MOORE LEER.
Dear Mrs. Smith:
The Design Advisory Committee (DAC) reviewed Mr. Moue's letter as requested and appreciate
his concern and comment_ It is rewarding and very helpful to our committee to get such feedback
So far, the idea of the circular perimeter sidewalk is very popular and I believe that Mr. Moore's
proposal for duplex meters in lieu of single meters will also get favorable comment from most
people.
Regarding M. Moore's concern for the large existing "spruce"tree at the Lexpress terminus, the
Committee feels in this case that removing the tree will actually enhance the overall design of Depot
Square by ung up the vista of the historic Depot building(now the Depositor's Trust) with its
attractive portico and cupola. This concept is explained more thoroughly in Volume I of Design
Guidelines for Commerrial Districts on pages 47 through 50.
Generally, most on our committee would be in favor of and even fight for saving venerable trees in
Lexington, even when not in as good health as this hemlock is,but this is one case where we feel
that the overall design will be improved by its removal. Needless to say,we are always open to
further discussion. (Any overall plans of Emmy Park that have been produced to date are far from
being fmalired. We consider the Emery Park `plane to be only in the initial stages of data
collection and program development. The one preliminary plan prepared by Bob Ossman as a
volunteer effort was done only to provide a rationale fix the more limited plan he prepared in
response to the Transportation Advisory Committee's immediate need for a safer pedestrian area at
the Lexpress terminus.)
Please call if you have any questions.

Mr. John Frey, Chairman
Design Advisory Committee
1133 Mass. Avenue
Lexington, MA 02173
Dear John:
At its meeting on November 18, 1991 , the Board of Selectmen reviewed
the report and recommendations of the Traffic Safety Advisory Com-
mittee on the request of the Design Advisory Committee for exten- g
sion of sidewalk at the corner of Meriam Street and Massachusetts
Avenue to eliminate the existing space at that location.
The Committee reported that the issue of installation of "neckdowns"
in the Center as a whole needs to be resolved but in order to move
in a positive direction quickly on the Meriam Street/Mass. Avenue issue,
the Committee reconnended the following on an interim basis:
. Institute a "No Stopping/Standing" regulation to
supplement the existing "No Parking' regulation
at that location;
. Paint yellow crosshatching on the pavement;
. Install three cones like those used in the crosswalks,
to block access to the location.
The Selectmen voted to accept the recommendations of the Traffic Safety
Committee, as stated above.
Very truly yours,
8D OF SELECTMEN
